I'd rather think that they were supporters of free speech even when the free speech went far beyond any acceptability. Max was and is a champion of free speech but there is a line and they crossed it. Any "allies" must have been such for that reason only, I HOPE. Otherwise, they were supporting and endorsing the crap that went beyond acceptable.
