02 Aug 11 - 12:40 PM (#3200230) Subject: Sidmouth Impressions From: GUEST,Fyldeplayer A very enjoyable 4 days at Sidmouth - clearly didn't see all options We were made most welcome in the Anchor middle bar, and Royal York singarounds. Folk club session at Rugby club was a joy both to play and listen, short session on prom produced a pound! and our spot at Dukes was, well ignored like everyone else but hey, the sun was out and it was fun. Seeing the crowded rooms at the Swan, Bedford Hotel etc I'm amazed people survive the duration, a well placed B&B allowed us some 'down time'. I now have to remember all the songs pasted on. I now know the Sailing club is not for me, but those present were clearly havin a good time, 'vive la difference' as we say in Berkshire |

Most people manage to survive the Swan, Bedford etc , by drinking copious quantities of glorious ale or whatever ,and availing themselves of whatever food (free !) is on offer ; the Bedford scores well on this front . I have often been reluctant to leave a Bedford session, anyway, as one can rarely get a seat again if one leaves ! I am glad that you and Alison enjoyed it , Dave ; I've gone , on and off , since 1965 ! (Even proposed to first wife outside the Black Horse in Fore Street whilst waiting for it to open during one Festival ; 1971 ! ) . |

Also bought a lovely viola, so two instruments to carry around. Right now, I'm sitting in the Ham with freda, waiting for the Spooky Men's lunchtime Big Spooky Thing to start. Saw them the other night and they were brilliant as usual. It was also nice to hear some Aussie voices :-) |

She was trying to get an old 3 wheel baby push chair onto the bus after unlading its contents onto the 2 young uns' "Only 2 kids but 14 million instruments." My impression is that traditional music is not under any threat of fading away. I saw so many young musicians and dancers from about 5 years old to 25. The other youth there just for the show were being exposed to the music and some will very likely take a more participatory path. |

Saw a few young un's on prom including two pipers - amazing. |

And no I didn't do them all or even everydance at those I was present at. The Documentary "The Way of the Morris" was amazing. I have never heard such applause for a film afterwards. When I am bored I watch for continuity errors - out of sequence filming etc. I noticed none - says it all. Bodhran workshop taught me never to enter a room with 30 Bodhrans playing a bodhran concerto. And nothing else. |
