Selling Instruments...Best Way?

At gatherings? Classified ads in the newspaper? (Do people even read them, anymore?) Craig's list? Some other format? (The dreaded) eBay? I don't feel right about listing them here. Your experiences? Thanks.

Saul

Do you want to sell a.s.a.p. for best money, or are you looking for a new home for an old friend?

Good home, decent money, but not gouging.

I've bought on-line, one good one, two passable. I sometimes buy and fettle them and sell them at our local Folk Festival, where we have a musical bring-and-buy one morning, where instruments and CDs and the like changes hands. If there isn't a sale at your FF, suggest it. That's what I did, in 1975, and it has been self-organising ever since.

People often buy & sell instruments at the Getaway, saul.... at least there are knowledgeable people there who can evaluate them and offer an opinion. (there is usually a table, counter...etc. with odd items.)

If there's an on-line forum for the particular type of instrument then selling through that is often better than ebay. They tend to form a sort of community so it's not like selling to some random stranger - there's a good chance the purchaser is known to someone you know in the real world (perhaps at a few removes), and you're probably less vulnerable to scams.

Craigslist has worked well for me. If the item is worth driving for, I first post in the largest local market and then post the same ad in the state's other large markets.

Good luck.

Depends on the quality of the instrument. If it's a quality string
instrument I recommend selling it through a reputable dealer
on commission. My experience here in the NE has been excellent
with John Bernunzio, who has many potential buyers and charges only 20% commission. You get fairly rapid action and no BS from cranky buyers. I'm sure that there are many dealers elsewhere in the country who offer
similar services.Larry

I'm reviving this old thread looking for advice on pricing and selling Anglo concertinas in the UK. The online forum I found was US. I've inherited a Stagi & a Connor. Good bellows, Stagi has a few sticking notes. I've seen a few prices on Hobgoblin, presumably a private sale would be less - and sale to a dealer even less, what % ?

Mo,

I assume that you've looked, but just in case you haven't:

Yes I did see it.
But before I advertise I suppose I'm hoping that someone will tell me what is reasonable to ask, compared with the Hobgoblin price. And what the difference between buying and selling price would be for a dealer.

I've auctioned two guitars on eBay UK and had no bother in getting the prices I wanted, and more. Decent, serious buyers. Postage wasn't cheap, but I just factored it into the start price.

I've bought one guitar on eBay, paid a reasonable price, and got just what I expected. I wouldn't normally buy guitars in eBay, but I knew the instrument model in question extremely well.

A dealer would probably offer half to two thirds the selling price on any instrument depending on condition, as he has to gaurantee the instrument at point of sale.

At one point, Hobgoblin in Crawley (now closed) weren't buying s/h - only offering PX on instruments. Shops that buy s/h stuff will usually offer about half their selling price - as GUEST above says, they have to offer guarantees, plus they have to factor in VAT on their sale - and make a profit.

Dealers have always told me that I'll get a better price by selling privately.
