Wanted: Pontic Lyra

I'm a man in love with a wee bit of a bother because, as deeply enamoured as I am of the Pontic Lyra the Early Music Shop are presently selling at their Sat Mills shop and on Ebay, I'm not prepared to pay that much for it. I am prepared to pay maybe £400 (or so) for a half decent instrument - with flexbility & negotiations an acceptable part of the bargain.

Please note, that whilst it's the Pontic Lyra I'm looking for, and not the near-identical Karadeniz Kemence / Black Sea Fiddle, I'll be interested in having a look if it's a partcularly nice one. So - anyone got a Pontic Lyra they want to sell? If so, PM me - or email me on suibhne@sedayne.co.uk.

I had no idea what you were talking about, but this article at Wikipedia enlightened me a bit.

That's assuming Pontic lyra = Pontian lyra = Kemenche.

Pontiac / Pontian / Pontic - means the same. You get them called Kemenche (in various spellings) but the Lyra and Karadeniz Kemence are two very different manifestations of the same basic fiddle idea which in terms of ergnomics is pretty much unique to the Black Sea region. One is Greek, the other Turkish. You can buy Turkish ones quite cheaply - on ebay, for example, where a higher quality one will cost around £250, wheras an indifferent quality Pontic Lyra will cost around £300. There's some on ebay now which don't have me salivating - not at that price anyway - and that's not allowing for how the thing actually sounds!

I have two pontian lyras. My father made them himself. They have been in my family about twenty years. I would love to find a place for them where they will be appreciated! I have them boxed so that they would not be damaged so they are in great condition. They might need to be tightened and tuned.

Hello, I have 3 Pontian Lyras that I would love to sell! One has to remeber while buying a lyra, that there are two major destinctions of Turkish kemences and Greek Lyras. 1)body size, 2)sound. Pricing for a lyra goes for about 360 U.S. dollars. If anybody has any questions on pictures or anything else in particular my number is 1(847)-834-1145.

Pontic lyra? I thought that was The Pope's money.
