BS: miracle in the ocean

You might have read about this..google for details..but a boy was plucked out of the ocean by surf swimmers a couple of days ago..dead probably for an hour...they kept doing CPR, finally he had a pulse.

A little girl, 12 years old, boggie boarded out to initially rescue him..he was on her board and a wave knocked them both over..he went under, she made it to shore..swimmers found the boy, basically dead, he was brought to local hospital and then a Portland hospital..came to..has spoken a bit..is expected to have brain damage but you just don't know..he sounded coherent a couple of times.

mg-

That was certainly a nasty link. Tied up my computer in knots and I finally had to force quit Safari.

The story is an interesting one but I'm still not sure how long the boy was actually submerged after he was knocked off the boggie board by a wave.

"he sounded coherent a couple of times"

I hope that means he will eventually be all right, or almost so.

It was just in a mystery novel I read, but the author wrote that sometimes when plunging into water the body goes into a kind of spasm and its systems close down. Perhaps that happened here.

I applaud those who kept up the CPR.

Sounds like a bad link. Probably best not to click on it. I think they are saying 25 minutes submerged but who knows. Then there was more time wtihout a pulse in the ambulance etc. mg

Time-wise, most websites are saying something like 15+ minutes.
I was involved in helping to rescue a kid once, and I lost all concept of time, and it felt a lot longer than it was. THAT kid drowned in a pond where the hospital I worked at just happened to be having its annual picnic, and that included EMTs who weren't on duty. He had no pulse when they started working on him, and it started and stopped a few times before they got him to the hospital. He made a full recovery. That was not too long after they discovered that you can't declare a person dead until they're warm and dead. Now, they induce hypothermia on purpose when they do bypass surgery.

This article says he's out of intensive care and his condition has been upgraded to "fair": masoncountydailynews.com/local-events/your-health/12335-boy-who-survived-drowning-meets-rescuer-condition-upgraded

These miracles are probably more prevalent than we know. Humans are adaptable and resilient. Miracles are for sooth-sayers, preachers, penitents, and New-Agers, not for rational people.

best wishes that the boy recovers fully. the girl might be inspired and find herself in a career of rescuing others in need!! we have had cold water drownings in rivers near here where the victims were revived after over 30 minutes submerged!!
