Short Story

Clam digging was a major part of a youngster life where i spent my earlier years. It was not an easy job because when the tide went out we had about 3 hours to dig as fast as we could to get as many as possible. They would be shelled or brought to the market the next day for selling. I never did this but I would shell them and then put them in a 24oz. bottle and with a sign saying "Clam for Sale" stand for hours waiting for a car to stop and give me a dollar for a jar. Today this jar would probably sell for 20.

Cohogs (yeah, I know) make the best clam chowder.

Two weeks ago my Aunt from Moncton brought me up a jar of those delicious Cohogs. It had been a lo0ng time since I had them. In fact the last time was when I visited you Gnu.

We used to get bottled quahogs cheap out Cassie Cape 30 years ago. And, when I was a lad, we used to get them ourselves at extreme low tide. Tricky for a short young lad to go out that far when the inshore ones were mostly picked. I had to submerge to feel around for them with my feet as I was only about 5'4" tall at 14 years old.

Now, they are expensive on accounta the sand dredging for top quality sand for glass that took place some years ago. The removal of the sands on the upstream littoral drift meant the muddy spots got washed away. And quahogs like the mud.

Best clams in the world. Posted this before... it's because of a gut parasite that only inhabits Shediac Bay and nearby areas (the Northumberland Straight... warmest waters north of The Carolinas). Same for the lobster which I have eaten from Labrador to Maine... Shediac Bay lobster is by far the best. Unless yer eatin lobster with Kendall in the kitchen, of course.
