BS: Ridiculous things your pets hate

Bandit has all of a sudden taken a great dislike to the sounds the tug boats in the harbor make. There is much barking and growling every time he hears them tootle. Yet he ignores the bums rummaging through the recycling bins right outside the window. Go figure.

My dog hates the GEICO gecko. He barks and growls every time he sees him on the tv.

My cat hates resonator guitars. It's convenient, in a way. Any time he's being a pain in the ass, all I have to do is grab one and he's through the cat door.

Exactly how far away he runs depends on the specific guitar and playing style. If I play acoustic bottleneck on the round-neck, he stops at the front porch. If I play lap-style on the square-neck, he goes a bit further, into the yard. If I plug the round-neck into the Marshall and turn it up to "6", he hides in the woods until the next morning.

I had a cat once that was playing with a plastic grocery bag and got his head stuck through the handle. He got spooked and ran, and of course the bag "chased" him. We caught him and removed the bag, with no harm done, but for a long time after that, he was afraid of plastic bags, and would leave the room if he ever heard anyone opening one.

*

I had another cat that liked to climb into the kitchen sink and lick the dirty dishes. We didn't think we ought to let him do that, so if we ever caught him at it, we'd grab him out of the sink and throw him on the floor. He continued to do it, but very quietly, so we wouldn't notice. But once in a while, there'd be the tell-tale clatter of dishes shifting in the sink, so we'd go in the kitchen and chase him away.

One day he was innocently dozing in the living room when we heard the sound of dishes spontaneously shifting in the sink. The cat jumped up and ran away and hid.

Bear hated transit busses. He was a big dog. At 6 months old, he could put his paws on my shoulders and look me (5'9") in the eyes. He used to break a fairly heavy chain every so often. The last time, at about 8 months old, he tackled the left front tire of a bus. His owner, my landlord, had him put down as the operation would have been a subsequent failure if he wasn't "calm" for a couple of months... and he was far from calm. Plus, we both worked long hours.

I have three Siamese cats, and two of them love my husband as much as me, but the third, Murphy, can't stand him. As soon as he shows his (jet black) face, Murphy's under the kitchen units. He must be a racist!

How odd, Eliza! Very strange indeed. Is this on a daily basis? Has yer hubby tried to befriend Murphy? As in being the one who feeds the cats and such?

My partner's sister's last dog hated flashlights. One of my childhood dogs couldn't stand the floor mop. He wasn't playing, either - he really loathed the thing. (So did I, but for different reasons.)

Three cats and a ferret at the moment all with quirks.

Mewan, even if on my mothers dressing table, needs picking up and putting down again for evening meal and at night will not eat (this time in the study) unless Pip hugs her (My hug will not work).

Oedipuss is just paranoid sometimes - can't work it out.

Snotcat expects routines (OK they all do but). eg. he expects my mother and I to be watching TV together at say 11pm (same bodies in same places). And he being a big cat expects a second helping. Anything out of place or his expectations throws him.

(and a generalisation with cats. they don't like change. Try rearranging the furniture or moving home)

Willy Weasel the famal ferret is completely different. Almost nothing upsets her but I'd doubt she would spot say bieng on the edge of 1000ft drop as potentialy dangerous. She pretty much, just does not care.

My cat fears the dishwasher when it's running. She can hear the water and thinks there is a flood surging through the house somewhere, possibly the basement. She won't go in the kitchen if it's running.

She also fears the microwave when it's running. Perhaps she thinks it's a cyclotron.

I don't think these fears are ridiculous if I imagine myself in her place.

I imagine myself in her place.

I think that's what I try to do. leeneia but some things make more sense to me than others.

Funny really say with cats as we have had several over the years. There ways are such that I would know each one was a cat rather than say a dog but at the same time have their own "personality traits".

I'd back myself to know each cat (present or deceased) we have had on this, even if marked identically and the same size.

I know what you mean, Jon.

One of mine was affectionate and confidant, one was a real cuddle-bug and not much else. This one has many fears. She makes up for it by playing soccer with styrofoam balls.

My cat, Tigi, (long gone) would jump in terror if she saw a piece of fabric with stripes on it. She had a problem with a striped scater rug too.

We had an Afghan hound that was terrified of flies. All my other dogs have picked up this phobia from one another to a greater or lesser extent, but none to the same extent as Jack. He lived to eighteen, so it didn't do him much harm.

You're right gnu, it's very odd, as my hubbie adores all three cats and treats them all the same. It's he who feeds them and likes them on his knee on the sofa. He's tried and tried to gently encourage Murphy, but no luck! Murphy only wants me, and not 'That African Man' !

I don't know about ridiculous, as I think their reaction is within reason, but my three boys hate motorcycles; specifically those with loud pipes. I live on Main St. which has a corridor of brick buildings on both sides (including the one we live in) and the cyclists love to accelerate down the hill which creates a hell of a noise. This happens daily and all three cats jump every time; you'd think after all these years they'd be used to it by now.

I think that both cats and dogs have very acute hearing, and sounds which are perfectly acceptable to us are almost torture to them!

Our last dog was scared of squeaky pet toys. If she picked something up and it made a noise, she would drop it and not go near it again.

While still married, my ex and I adopted a stray dog. At first if the dog (ironically named Happy) was in the room when my ex removed his belt, happy dove under the bed. Eventually he stopped doing that but would shake. Finally he realized nobody would beat him with the belt--or anything else. During this period we would often put the belt on the floor. Later we would fold it and hold in both hands close to the floor. I don't know what a real pet therapist would have done, but it was what we thought of at the time.

My cat used to hate me doing anything that wasn't paying attention to her. Putting on make-up, combing my hair, reading a paper, even writing a letter that was just taking that little bit too long. She would stare fixed at me and blink and then turn up her purr a few decibels to make me more aware of her presence. And then if that wasn't going to get her anywhere she would take a swipe at the offending paper, comb or pen hitting it out of my hand completely to make me pay her attention.

Dog barks at ladders and concertina. Don't understand the ladders, but I'm a crap concertina player so that's fine.

He's also very good at protecting you from horses and thunder by getting up close so you don't move and get injured. The fact he happens to be behind you is secondary.

I had a dog named Ginger who was a real chicken shit when it came time for him to have a bath, a frequent need because he rolled in stuff like dead fish (well, not like dead fish because dead fish don't roll in anything unless it's canned salmon or tuna in a wrap). Anyway, he knew the word 'bath' and all its implications. He never learned other words like sit, behave, roll over--he had the roll over part down and that's why he learned about 'bath'. Nothing else made him shake and hide, just the "B" word. Strange dog.

We've rarely bathed a dog but I'd imagine it would have followed their general like (or otherwise) of water. Two loved it but Meg, our border collie, hated it.

---

With words, we had to watch our own conversation with Misty. "Come on", "right then" and "is it time?" (although not "bed time") would be taken to mean that she was getting a trip out with her and lead to a spell of excited barking. A word that would upset her if said in the house (and perhaps as well) was "toilet".
