BS: Goderich, Ontario struck by tornado

Subject: BS: Goderich, Ontario struck by tornado
From: Charmion

The beautiful Huron County town of Goderich, home of the Celtic Roots Festival and the Celtic College -- not to mention our friend Mooh -- was hit by a tornado
yesterday that tore up the elegant Victorian town centre and killed a man.

Here's hoping the good people of Goderich can recover quickly from this ferocious blow.

Thanks for that information, Charmion. Has anyone heard from Mooh?

Mooh's real name was not mentioned in any articles I've been able to find. I will message him and let him know there is some concern here.

Message sent. However, internet access could have been affected in Goderich.

Crap! I never thought about Mooh!

9... yeah, internet access could very well be a problem.

Sfter seeing the pics, it's a wonder (thank goodness!) that more people were not killed. The guy that died, 61 yers old, was working in a salt mine? Seems odd but I suppose the deatails will come.

9... as you would be aware, the biggest problem now, besides the obvious, will be "tourists".

Please keep us posted if you hear from Mooh. That is so sad about the town centre and the loss of life and buildings.

I mentioned in the message to Mooh that this thread was here. I had his e-mail addy, but it seems to have gone when I got rid of my Yahoo e-mail account because it was being used to send spam to people with whom I corresponded--so I trashed then deleted the whole thing.

Cut and pasted from above the BS line by JohnB.
info obtained via a mutual friend on Facebook.

"Some pictures (actually a lot) here
I believe Mooh is OK although I am not sure about his house. Don't Know about Black Walnut.
The others (not Mudcatters) I know from the area are OK too, from the one's I have heard from.
The fatality was a guy who worked at the Salt plant.
The pictures tell the sad tale, the Tornado basically looks like it came off the lake and up West street, around the Square and ran out of steam, fortunately.
MANY businesses destroyed in the process and TONS of firewood created in just minutes, clean up and rebuliding will take a long time.
Goderich is a very sad sight at the moment.

Horrible tragedy.

"The guy that died, 61 years old, was working in a salt mine? Seems odd . . ."

Not so odd, really. Major salt mine in Goderich, Sifto, I think. Access from the harbour area, right on the track of the tornado. The mine shafts are more-or-less horizontal and extend some 13 MILES out under Lake Huron.

My cousin & family live in Goderich. They're okay - small amount of property damage only.

I just hope Mooh's likewise okay.

I hope so, too. Good to know your family are all okay.

The photos really show such terrible tragedy and destruction, esp. #35. Looks as though it was truly a beautiful place.

Any updates on the damage and injuries? Anything from Mooh or Black Walnut? I sent BW an email, but haven't heard back...most likely due to power outages.

From: Mooh

Hi Folks, I'm okay.

The bride and I were up north, just starting a week of holidays when we got word that Goderich was blasted. We rushed home to find the general chaos that you all saw on the news. The ruined church that was prominent in the news is immediately to the east of us, about 12 feet away. It is still partly standing, but it threatens our house. Until it falls or is taken down, we can't do much about our place. Heavy rain this morning wasn't entirely prevented by tarping the roof, so now we have water to add to the glass, insulation (not ours), dirt, and debris all over the inside of the house. All trees are ruined, as are the fence, tent trailer, gardens, windows, paint, etc. Structural engineers, insurance agents, brokers, adjusters, assessors, contractors, police, Labour Ministry, town authorities, neighbours, volunteers, rubberneckers, all contribute to our lives this week. My lesson studio will be delayed in starting this year as there is no way the place is fit for work, teaching, or learning.

We are staying with friends, and we have Rosie The Wonder Dog & Cosmo The Other Dog with us. Within the next week or so we'll have a better idea of the future. In the meantime, one daughter is coming home, and friends will be getting more visits.

Many friends had more damage than us. One lost his restaurant and his home, another lost her whole house, another his car wash, another his home...and many others lost cars, windows, roofs...never mind the downtown square businesses, whole blocks of which had collapsed roofs and blown out storefronts.

The saltmine shut down due to aboveground damages, the evaporator plant shut down, every bank is closed, the post office is closed, and there are more police and service personnel in town than ever before.

When does it return to normal?

Peace, Mooh.

Joe...We love Tobermory too, and often wander up there as the old family place isn't far south. There was a major fire there last year that destroyed one of our favourite pubs, The Pub In The Tub. They rebuilt and we were hoping for our first visit this week until this stupid tornado changed everything.

Peace, Mooh.

From: Charmion

Holy crap, Mooh. Thank God you were out of town.

Is it St. George's, the Anglican church, that lost its roof and steeple? Any word from Sifto about what's needed to get back into production?

And how 'bout the generosity of the Province of Ontario! Five million dollars -- yowza!

Subject: RE: BS: Goderich, Ontario struck by tornado
From: GUEST,999

A WHOLE five million? That should repair one major building, huh?

25 Aug 11 - 03:13 PM (#3212625)
Subject: RE: BS: Goderich, Ontario struck by tornado
From: Mooh

Charmion...No, St. George's (my church, btw) is safe, it's Victoria Street United Church that's in ruin. I haven't heard about Sifto other than everyone is on layoff. The damage at the mine is surreal, conveyors on the ground, buildings crushed or blown away, and other carnage. The $5 million as I understand it is to cover the difference between what businesses get in insurance and what is really required, the judgement of which is rendered by a committee yet to be conceived. I doubt it will go far.

Today has been all about insurance so far. Not fun, but essential.

Peace, Mooh.

All the best,

Sorry to hear about your place Mooh, it was 25 or so years ago when the Orangeville (Grand Valley to Barrie) tornado missed us by a mile (it was closer really) I would not want to be any nearer.
It takes years for the Trees and Forests to look right again, houses are quicker.
Hope you are back to "normal" soon.
Still no news from Black Walnut, just spent a night in Toronto, where someone else was asking about her.

Black Walnut is fine. She has replied to my email. Her house is ok. Power was restored to her street recently. Information is still sketchy regarding how other friends have managed, and she confirms that there is a terrible amount of damage to the town centre (you're welcome, gnu) as well as the salt mine.

I am sure she would applaud my posting this excerpt, regarding what people can do to help Goderich and its citizens:
*****************
"RUNA - the fabulous Celtic group from Philadelphia that performed at the Goderich Celtic Festival... are going to hold a benefit concert for Goderich...others might consider donating to the Goderich Tornado Relief Fund. Even $5 helps! http://www.stratfordbeaconherald.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3271122 ] "

Good heavens! Mooh, so relieved to hear from you, but so sorry to hear of the damages. May it all get sorted, soon, and you find some semblance of the peace you are so generous with. Good to ehar of the critters being safe, too!

Maeve, thanks so much for letting us know about BW. That is a relief, too!

Much love and support to all effected,

kat

Spent part of yesterday evening with black walnut and her husband. All is well with them. For those of you on FaceBook, there are lots of pictures connected there. Our internet here is great but our time is limited. A simple Google will find lots of pictures.

Thanks everyone for your concern. Today we might see the church next door come down. Not a happy day for those folks.

Peace, Mooh.

For the curious, we moved home a week ago, 20 weeks after the tornado. Almost everything is done on the house except the exterior paint and some tweaking of the floors, but nothing that obstrucks our living there. New roof, windows, 2 exterior doors plus 2 storm doors, fences, shed, some drywall, lots of carpet and linoleum, refinished wood floors, exterior aluminum trim (soffets, facsia, frieze, window and door frames), new gravel on the driveway, eavestrough...

I started my lesson business after the Christmas break in my home studio. The temporary place was okay but there's no place like home.

Lots of businesses and families still suffering.

Peace, Mooh.

I'm glad to hear you're back under your own intact roof again, Mike. I hope the planning for this year's edition of the Celtic Roots festival is going well, despite the damage to the park. It's on our summer agenda, as usual.

From: Mooh

Charmion...Thanks. We're not involved in the festival planning anymore. At this point I don't really have confirmation that I'm playing there either. This would be my 20th if I do.

Phil...A visit would be lovely, though we kind of owe you now!

We spent much of this past week (our March Break) doing yard work as the weather has been sublime. Nails, screws, glass, pieces of shingle & insulation, are still popping up under the rake. We are engaging a landscape firm to rototill and level the yard as the trees and gardens were pretty much wiped out. We did plant and transplant some shrubs though. Exterior painting will wait for summer.

A few of you have been here and if you imagine this, The Square is visible from my porch, in fact we can see part way down West Street as half a block of the Square is now removed. As is human nature, sadness has given way to hopefulness for the future.

Peace, Mooh.
