Alison McMorland & Peta Webb based their recording of the ballad on this Margaret Stewart's version. Was she from Fife? And is it possible to listen to her recording? Please, help. Thanks. R |

From: Jim Carroll The Margaret Stewart who is featured on 'The Muckle Sangs' singing Little Sir Hugh is described as being Jeannie Robertson's aunt, though surprisingly, there is no background information on her. From: BobKnight You could try contacting Tony Robertson, Stanley's son through the Elphinstone Institute at Aberdeen University. Maggie Stewart was my grandfather's sister, as was Maria Stewart, Jeannie's mother. I only ever saw her two or three times when I was a very small child, but I know that Stanley and the Robertson family talk/talked about "aunty Maggie," quite often as regards learning songs from her. |

His wife, my great-grandmother was Mary Croll, and they had quite a large family, including Maggie and Maria Stewart, Jeannie Robertsons mother. Maggie lived in Aberdeen most of her life as far as I know, so I hope that answers the question of where she came from. |

yes she was Jeannie Robertson'\s aunty and I was in the house when Hamish Henderson Recorded some of my grandmothers songs the sung a song young hugh to an old air Ye Banks and Breas o bonny doune. but the same song was called Sir Hugh and the Jew's Daughter.
yes Maggie Stewart died at the age of 80 years old and Stanley Robertson Recorded some of her storys and Ballads. Maggie Stewart was a Composser of Folk songs she recorded to Hamish Henderson but Stanley Robertson would not touch her hard work in her home made family songs becouse the songs she had compossed she give then to me her grandson James Stewart.
The wee house in the Country, was a song that Stanley Robertson sung a lot but he would not put it on an LP without Maggie Stewart's help in getting it recorded. The Shooting Green's was one of her songs about my granduncle, he was Maggie Stewart's Brother Davie Stewart that owned a farm up on top O' Shooting Greens as Davie he was my Grand uncle, also an uncle to Jeannie Robertson the Ballad folk Singer from Aberdeen.
My GrandMother Maggie Stewart was Born at the Loch O' the Lee's outside Banchory in the year of 1902 and died in Aberdeen in the year of 1983 aged 80 years old. she lived in Forfar for years when Hamish Henderson went to Forfar to Record some of the Stewarts and Maggie Stewart was just one of them same family of Folk singers.
it took me a long time to do my Family tree and I know where most of my grandmothers cousings are and her neices, who they are, as Hamish Henderson Recorded them all , but not me as I was just 15 years old and sent into a childreans homes in Aberdeenshire.
Sheila Stewart and Jess Smith tells the Storys of travelling peoples children getting up lifted from travelling peoples camps in Aberdeenshire and all over the Perthshire glens well. its true in what they are saying, I was just one off them travelling children that was lifted 18 years in a childrens home was no fun, gust cruelty to children. I did not know who was my family of Stewart's Robertson's and the Mc Donald's untill now. I know, in the year of 1952 before I was born Hamish Henderson was doing some Ballad recordings on the travelling people. well I was not born then I was sent into a chilrens home at the age of 4 years old and did not come out untill I was 15 years old. As regards the other thing you mentioned, the taking of traveller children by the "authorities" is something I'm only just finding out about. For those of you who are unaware of this disgraceful and inhumane episode in Scottish history, during the 1950's and 60's, and perhaps earlier too for all I know, Scottish travellers endured a "mini-holocaust" where traveller children were lifted form campsites and put into care. Some were sent abroad to Canada, and I presume Australia too. Many have only found out recently of their traveller families. One woman I know, in her early fifties, has only just met her brother and sister in the last few months, but sadly too late to be re-united with her parents as they are both deceased. One traveller, Sandy Stewart has written a book about his experiences, and it's time those responsible were exposed. |

I have discovered another written by Patsy Whyte, called "No Easy Road." grand niece of Betsy Whyte, who wrote "Yellow On The Broom." Patsy, like Sandy was taken from her family in the 1950's. |

I am hoping that sandy gets this across as he phoned me for his grandmothers death lines. james stewart was my grandfather, my mother was betsy stewart, her father james stewart a travelling man, called big jimmy ma hungery as known by travelling people. his father was frank stewart died in stonhaven in 1931. frank stwart brother was david stewart his wife was maggie croll, she married david stewart, my great grand uncle, up in fourge by huntly.

So that makes maggie stewart the folk Ballad singer and storyteller (the) neice to david stewart that married maggie croll. maggie stewart the ballad singer and storyteller, her mother was mary croll and father william stewart.
