English trad. songs with brass accomp.

Hi, all,

I am looking for recordings of English traditional songs with brass band accompaniment - not particularly up-tempo, but more like the sound you get from a Salvation Army Band. The only one I've found so far that's similar to what I am looking for is: "The Streams of Lovely" Nancy on Brass Monkey's recording "Flame of Fire". However, that one uses the brass in between the verses, but not during the singing itself.

I'd love to hear your suggestions. Thanks.

Swan Arcade recorded a brass-accompanied version of "Trimdon Grange" on their 1976 album, "Matchless".

If you can get hold of some Jiggery Pokery CDs, they are awesome..saw a couple of the band members (I think band is no longer) at Princeton..

But they are so up=tempo in what I have heard it might not be what you want. mg

The brass band plays throughout Barry Dransfield's Spencer the Rover - much more Sally Ann than Brass Monkey.

Several Brass Monkey tracks with band playing during verses: The Flash Lad, The Foxhunt, The Maid & The Palmer, and Sovay to name but four.

Well, the brass doesn't accompany the song, it comes at the end; the brass section also includes reeds, so doesn't sound like an English brass/Salvation Army band, it's more modelled on a Bahamian brass band which is probably(possibly) where the song comes from. So, it's not what you are looking for at all really, but nonetheless I hope you might like to have a listen to the Boat Band doing Shallow Brown with brass

Tangential....but, Georgina. Is Swan Arcades "Matchless" still available? Had the original LP once, but it's gone the way of all things sadly!!

Thanks for great suggestions everyone. I knew I had something in my computer, but I had no way to search for it. Snuffy hit the nail right on the head with Spencer the Rover - except it was Robin Dransfield, not Barry. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a downloadable copy of Swan Arcade's album Matchless, but I do still have a turntable, so I might try and pick up the vinyl sometime.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Wail!
Cheers, Rob.

Kate Rusby is fond of colliery brass bands and has used them on a number of her CDs - to very good effect, I might add.

Then there is Richard and Linda Thompson's "I Want to See The Bright Lights Tonight".

As well as occasional use of actual brass bands, Brass Monkey could get some striking brass-band effects by combining their trumpet & trombone & saxophone, recorded forward, with their other, more 'standard' folk-style instruments like accordion & guitar behind, on tracks like their superb rendering of The Old Grenadiers March, remembered from the [alas!] late Howard Evans's days as a Brigade of Guards bandsman.

Stoof records kept re-pressing "Matchless" for some years (though Swan never saw any financial benefit from this), so there should be copies available - at least in continental Europe. But I don't think it's been for sale in England for a long time.

I arranged brass accompaniment for two tracks on Pete Coe's latest CD 'Backbone'.

'Byker Hill' and 'Light From The Lighthouse' (Zentz).
