27 Aug 11 - 11:35 AM (#3213468) Subject: The Ballad Index and Bronson From: Roberto I often find a little difference in the number of versions of a ballad in Bronson (The Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads) and in the number of versions Bronson has according to the Ballad Index. One example for all: Child #243. In Bronson I find 145 versions + 1 in addenda; the Ballad Index says there are 146 + 1. Why? |

28 Aug 11 - 01:46 AM (#3213829) Subject: RE: The Ballad Index and Bronson From: Roberto Yes, Dick, but as I said, why does the Ballad Index says he listed a certain amount of versions of a ballad, while in his book he generally has one or two less? |

28 Aug 11 - 09:30 AM (#3213959) Subject: RE: The Ballad Index and Bronson From: Abby Sale Good question. Far as I can tell, it's a miscommunication between the inestimable Bob Waltz of the BI and myself. Fault is mine, I failed to be clear. I listed 146 versions of #243. This was intended as the total, including appendix. Since it took a while to go through it all, I did not include appendix in the initial material for volumes I & II. By the time I got to V. III, I saw I should include appendix items with the main listing. I then went back and addended Vols I & II that I'd already sent to Bob. Bob may likely assumed the totals for Vols. III & IV failed to include appendix. This was 2002 so I don't really remember the sequence - can barely what I did this morning. The discrepancy likely is only to the extent of the number of items in the Appendix covering ballads in Volumes III & IV. (Few.) I'll have a look. |
