CATHERINE AND AUGUSTUS
by Bill Gallaher c SOCAN 1993

Far across the rolling plains, Red River carts go winding,
To the line of land and sky, to find one more horizon;
Hear the groaning of the wheels, the creaking of the leather,
Overlanders on the move, and the trail goes on forever.

Catherine rode a buckskin mare, Augustus rode along beside her,
With their daughter and two sons, and a child that stirred inside her;
Down that long and desperate road they boldly westward wandered,
Till they crossed the Great Divide, high among the shining mountains.

One more mountain left to climb, one more river left to cross,
How they made it heaven knows, too damned many miles to walk;
It must be love that sees you through, love that heals the sorrow,
Help you through the troubled times, help you chase each new tomorrow.

Down canyons forged in stone, the winter snow came flying,
The children (turned to bones) heard their mother's bitter crying;
Catherine said, "I can't go on, leave me here forever!"
But Augustus drove them on, said "We'll make it through together!"

Now every journey ends, just like every story,
You do what must be done and find in that your glory;
Now they say of those who dreamed, who boldly westward wandered,
No finer words than these: "There goes an Overlander!"

Rick Fielding loved this song, and he told me he intended to record it. He didn't get the chance before he passed. I intend to record it in his honor.

Bill Gallaher is a fine gentleman. Jeri has a recording of Bill's and offered to burn me a copy. We agreed that we would get Bill's permission first. I sent bill an email and told him I would like to send him $15.00 to get his permission to copy the CD. He had me send him the money and he sent me the CD AND his songbook with charts of all his songs. One of those songs is The Ballad of Ginger Goodwin. I sing that regularly at labor rallies. In fact, I will be doing on Labor Day at Laborfest in Grand Rapids, MI.

All the best,

Mick

Have you heard the Last Battle about Luis Reil?? Awesome song. He is originally from the prairies, and nobody can write about windstorms as well as he can..mg

Three dollar dreams is one of my favourite Bill Gallagher songs. His CDs are worth hunting down.

Yes, Mary. Jeri turned me on to The Last Battle first of all. It is a song I often perform. I think Bill Gallaher is one of the finest songwriters out there. Shadow Boats is another of my favorites.

In Seattle we loved Mary and the Seal...some people find it not to their liking for some reason having to do with the selkie story..but the tune is great. mg

Yep, another of my favorites. Mudcatter Karen k and I did a duet arrangement of Mary and the Seal at Getaway a few years ago. It's a great song. I can't imagine anyone having a problem with it. It is based on the classic selkie tales.

Does Bill still come to gatherings?
