Vi Hart's video covers a staggering amount of information in just over 12 minutes - very cleverly done.

Yes - I think the producer in me is even more impressed than the musician (the mathematician is sitting in the back row watching seagulls as usual)

As ethnomusicology it's complete twaddle.

The film on chords and overtones is quite nicely done, but exhibits the usual and annoying neglect of all the non-linear vibrators like free reeds and banjo heads for which the "first overtones" are NOT AT two times the lowest resonance and the harmonics within a note ARE NOT IN PRIME-RATIO relationship to each other.

While the prevalent ignorance and refusal to accept these slightly different instruments with full understanding of their artistic potential is CRASS AND IGNORANT BIGOTRY and fails to give fair credit to the proper and artistic SCREECHING and HOWLING, and TWANKING of the ignored instruments, in this case I must assume that this is an introductory lesson and that the physics of the "TWANG," "THUNK," "BOINK," and other more complex and delightful sounds of the nonlinear instruments will come in a presentation to follow soon.

I have defered my request to Congress for inclusion of a prohibition on discrimination based on "linearity" pending a review of whether it's best suited for inclusion in the basic prohibitions against discriminations based on sex, age, religioue belief, et. al. or should be included in the Americans with Disabilities Act provisions.

Full recognition and acceptance of all diversities must be ENFORCED, (no matter how much we don't like them).

John

Someone linked to this the other day, and whilst it is a lucid explanation of the harmonic series and its main effects, I was dismayed to find it contained no gardening tips whatsoever. Who does this woman think she is?
