BS: To Good Homes - old/used books-Last Chance!

29 Aug 11 - 04:30 PM (#3214726)
Subject: BS: To Good Homes - old and/or used books
From: katlaughing

I have a few books left to give away and would rather they go to good homes of folks I know than to be bundled off to a charity shop. I will do if no one is interested, but thought there might be a few some Mudcatter might like. Maybe this could be a kind of Mudcat Book Swap, though I don't want to swap..just give away!:-)I didn't want to put them in the auction as they need to go, soon, and I'm not sure they would garner enough interest for competitive bidding.

Some of them are old, some of them are interesting or, not so easily found, but nothing spectacular that I know of. If you can donate a small amount to Mudcat, I will pay postage save for one set...my maternal granddad's four volume dictionary. It is heavy! (I will still pay postage regardless of donations, but I'd like Mudcat to get a little, when possible.)

Anyway, here's the list, please note your interest in this thread or by PM. I'll keep the list updated if there are claims for them. If anyone wants pix, please let me know. More info on them is available through searching www.addall.com which searches all online bookstores for copies. Thanks!

Siddhartha - A new Directions Paperback 1951 - 18th printing - yellowed but intact and readable, was $1.25 when new!:-)

The Tarot Revealed: A Modern Guide to Reading the Tarot Cards by Eden Gray. Hardback with dustjacket - 1969 Bell PUblishing, a division of Crown Publishers (the only listing for the 1969 version I could find at www.addall.com was for paperback priced at $30!)Taken, No Longer Available.

Life Among the Scots- Janet Adam Smith -1949 Collins 14 St James's Place London - with 8 colour plates and 21 B&W illustrations - part of the BRITAIN IN PICTURES -The British People in Pictures series - hardback with dustjacket. DJ has some wear on edges and corners, but is intact. Former owner's name inscribed inside front cover.Taken, No Longer Available.

Skyward Ho! edited by Franklin K. Mathiews(sic), Chief Scout Librarian Boy Scouts of America - "Profusely illustrated" and "Published with the approval of the Boy Scouts of America" by Grosset and Dunlap 1930 is the last copyright date entered, though there are several listed. It includes a letter from Charles A. Lindbergh to "Fellow Scouts" printed in the first chapter, "Lindbergh and the Boy Scouts by Peter O. Lamb. I bought it mostly for the wonderful illustrations, but the stories are a glimpse of early days of flight, survival, inventiveness, and fun. It is bound in red, binding is slightly loose, spine is frayed on edges. Child's name is written on a bookplate page of the book and there is repair tape inside the front board.

Seasonal Songs from Caprilands Poems by Adelma Grenier Simmons - autographed by the author to me Nov. 29, 1991, published in 1990 by Clinton Press of Tolland, CT. Caprilands was one of my very fav. places to visit in New England and Mrs. Simmons was a most precious and important figure in herbal lore..she had incredible knowledge and style -- often went to Oxford in the summer to lecture. There's more about her HERE. I will post examples of the poems if anyone wishes, though it might take a day or two. Small paperback.
Taken, No Longer Available.

Questioning the Millennium: A Rationalist's Guide to a Precisely Arbitrary Countdown by Stephen Jay Gould - perhaps outdated, but in perfect condition with intact dust jacket - 1997.
Taken, No Longer Available.

Betty Zane by Zane Grey 1933 Grosset & Dunlap - hardback, a little loose, but intact. Pages are naturally yellowed with age. About Zane's grandmother.
Taken, No Longer Available.

Turtle Island Alphabet - A Lexicon of Native American Symbols and Culture by Gerald Hausman; forward by N. Scott Momaday - stated First paperback edition 1993, St. Martin's Press - oversized with numerous photos and illustrations.
Taken, No Longer Available.

The Eternal City by Hall Caine - from my maternal granddad's private library, it has his stamp inside the front cover, listed as #132 and across from that is an inscription by my grandmother dated Feb. 1902. Hardback, frayed on corners, slightly loose, intact. Published by D. Appleton and CO 1901 - nt stated, but appears to be a First Edition.

Birthdays of Freedom - America's Heritage from the Ancient World by Genevieve Foster. Pub-Chas. Scribner's Sons, NY 1952. Oversized hardback, children's book with illustrations.

I have ten more to list, BUT it's time to take a break for the Grandson, so I'll be back with more.

Thanks a bunch, even if you're not interested and if ya are, I look forward to hearing from you!

Hmmm - No copies of Richard Farinas "I've been down so long it looks like up to me"? I guess I'll just have to keep looking.

'"I've been down so long it looks like up to me"?'

Wesley, the title you are looking for is

"Been down so long it looks like up to me."

It's available at Amazon and other places on the www. Shouldn't be hard to find.

Kat, I would be very interested in :
Betty Zane by Zane Grey 1933 Grosset & Dunlap - hardback, a little loose, but intact. Pages are naturally yellowed with age. About Zane's grandmother.

Turtle Island Alphabet - A Lexicon of Native American Symbols and Culture by Gerald Hausman; forward by N. Scott Momaday - stated First paperback edition 1993, St. Martin's Press - oversized with numerous photos and illustrations.

If we can agreed on a compensation and shipping info.....hooray!

I just watched Hidalgo, a movie from 2004, that I was surprised I had not heard of..about an endurance rider (thompkins?) and his mustang horse. That would be an interesting book too. Also am reading "Song of the Coyote"

Good on ya kat... charity shops are cool most of the time but I think your idea is far better than some pro buying them up at the charity shop and selling them for a profit with VERY little going to charity which is what would likely happen.

Thanks, everyone!

open mike, Betty Zane has been spoken for, but Turtle Island Alphabet is yours. Just PM me your mailing addy, please. Whatever you might be able to send to Mudcat fine, if things are tight do not worry about it. I just want these to go to folks who will appreciate them. Oh, and I LOVED Hidalgo! Have you read The Cowboy and the Cossack? I'll bet you'd love it.

Sorry, Wesley, no Farina, that would be lovely, though!

gnu, thanks. We watched a guy at the local Goodwill one day. He had a hand scanner and a cellphone, looking up the worth of likely books to purchase and, obviously, resell. I tried reselling. I even have a store at biblio.com, but I just have a hard time letting them go to strangers. The best charity I've found, for me, is a shop run by pet rescuers started by a medical doc!

Thanks, Sins. I know...I never, ever, thought I'd see a day when I would winnow out my books so much, but it is freeing, in a way.

Well, yes, but I am not offering it, Ebarnacle. *bg* I have two copies. One falling to bits and the other intact. I have read it twice and enjoyed it every bit the second time as the first. It's a keeper! I just wish my dad had known of it before he passed.

Tomorrow morning is going to be very busy, but I'll try to get the others listed by afternoon sometime. Thanks to all.

"One falling to bits" sometimes is a good thing since I got a decent auto-feed scanner that can handle "slightly fragile" stuff. The crumbly ones are easier to take apart to run through. Of course if it's really crumbly you get "bits" in the scanner that leave tracks on the scan, so there are limits. The pages are as intact coming out as when they go in, and I've considered "rebinding" a couple; but that's pretty time intensive and fairly old pages don't really take well to new glue and stitching.

A lot of my "accumulated wisdom" is obsolete technical stuff that takes a lot less space on the computer than on the book shelf, but cutting the pages apart to go through the scanner, with books in good condition, is "hard labor." Once that's done, dropping them through the scanner is just "button pushing," although minor "clever button pushing" is required sometimes.

I've tried taking some to the used book shops, but they're usually still laughing when I leave. The only ones that might be even remotely interesting to anyone else are worth more to me as digital copies than to anyone else, so I mostly just rip 'n tear as required.

John

Here's the second batch. Same deal as above:

Masterpieces of Terror and the Unknown-A Treasury of Bizarre Tales Old and New Selected by Marvin Kaye Guild America Books, Doubleday Book and Music Clubs - 1993. Fifty eight stories and poems. Authors include: Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, Authur Machen, Richard Matheson, and many more. 573 pages including acknowledgements. Good condition, slightly wobbly, dj has tears, but is all there.:-)

The Real Life Diary of a Boomtown Girl a novel by David Breskin. 1989 Viking - good condition with dj. Smalltown Wyoming girl lands a job with an all-women blasting crew in a coal mine during the boom times all the while telling about her life on the new frontier.

Great Short Stories - Volume II Ghost Stories edited by William Patten. P.F. Collier & Son, 1906. Red board with decorative black border on front. Spine is loose and has been taped (stupidly with scotch tape!) I will post a list of the authors and stories if anyone is interested. Good stuff!! Very classic. 428 pages

Innocents Abroad Mark Twain, 1911 edition Grossett and Dunlap. Signed by my paternal grandfather. Spine, front and back cover are detached, but otherwise in decent condition.
Taken-No Longer Available

The Search for the Girl With the Blue Eyes- A Venture into Reincarnation - Jess Stearn, 1968 Doubleday & Co. Hardback with dj which has some discolouration. Book is in good condition. 304 pages.

The Auctioneer by Joan Samson. Simon & Schuster 1975. Hardback with dj which has small tears along tis edges. Book is in good condition. One of the best, terrifying novels I've ever read. Right up there with The Lottery by Shirley Jackson.

Mexico - A Study of Two Americas by Stuart Chase in collaboration with Marian Tyler. Illustrated by Diego Rivera. Inscribed by my paternal grandfather, Property of Paul F. Hudson of God knows where! 1942 MacMillan Company - Good condition, for reading, there are a few spots on the front and discolouration on the edges of the pages visible when closed. 338 pages including index

If I Were King by Justin Huntly McCarthy - Grossett & Dunlap, 1901. Intact, but spine is shaky. Photo plate on the front, green boards. Also inside front cover is a very dramatic plate/photo/engraving signed "Marceau." I think this may have been in conjunction with a movie, but don't remember for sure. It is inscribed by my paternal grandmother given to her in 1908 as a Christmas gift.

Great Tales of Terror and the Supernatural edited by Herbert A. Wise & Phyllis Fraser - The Modern Library, 1944. 1080 pages including acknowledgements. This is one of those take apart and scan ones John mentioned. It is very readable, but missing front and back cover, though it still has the spine. It was "well-read" by whomever had it before me, then by myself and my children.:-) As with the other, I will list authors, etc. if there is interest.

And, last for now, but not least:

The Modern World Dictionary of the English Language with numerous editors, etc. Four volumes last copyright noted is 1906 by P. F. Collier & Son. Inside each front and back cover and facing pages is marbled(marbelised?) paper.

Thanks, again!

"A digital copy of each would have been great."

A good scanner with automatic sheet feeder is almost essential for books. Laying single sheets on a flatbed is extremely time consuming and produces pains in muscles you didn't know you had from the repetitive motions. Clean separation of the pages is essential, so you need a sharp knife and a steel straight edge to guide it.

I started off with a rather expensive HP multipurpose that claimed to be able to feed a page, scan both sides of it, and feed the next page. It turned out that its preference was to scan one side and eat the other side. It's still an excellent printer, ink jet at half the page cost of my B/W Laser, so I'll eventually get my money's worth if it keeps running.

My current tool is an Epson single pass autofeed - not exactly cheap, but reasonable for what it does. If I select pdf output it assembles pages in the order scanned into a pdf, but for multi page 2-sided stuff I've found it a lot faster to scan to jpg one side, which gives a separate jpg file for each page. Flop the stack over and scan the other side. The first side pages have to be renumbered to odd pages, which is trivial with a simple batch file. The second side though is in reverse order so the order has to be reversed and the pages renumbered to even numbers. Once they're all in order, my PDF converter is drag-n-drop to assemble a PDF from the jpg pages.

I found it easiest to have a separate batch file for each "number of pages" to flip the even numbered pages at the right place. Not as difficult as it might sound.

When the HP jammed on a page, it was impossible to get the jammed page out without tearing it to bits and fragments. When the Epson (rarely) jams, a quick pull on one handle opens the entire feed path and the "jammed page" falls out cleanly. Enormous difference.

My 8,000 page Chevy maintenance manual (4 volumes each 3" thick) did take about 3 days (Flimsy Paper and frequent rescans of individual pages that "missed"), but a typical 300 to 400 page book is usually a couple of hours, once you've got the method down pat. The scans aren't quite all perfectly nice and straight, but good enough for my needs so I rarely bother with rescans. Unfortunately since I scan and save at "production quality" and moderate compression to preserve printability, the PDF files are larger than I'd hoped, but there's always a trade-off or two.

I've managed to produce about 750 PDF files in my "Books" folder, most of which are books or pamphlets, with a few individual pages mixed in (Individual scores from music books, etc). The Epson scanner is barely 8 months old, and accounts for nearly all of the useful scans.

Now if only there was a decent scanner for those oversized Art Book pages... ... (The cheapest scanner for page widths over 8.5 inches that I've found was $1,200. I'm still looking.)

John

Great idea, kat! I wish I'd seen this thread sooner. I've been weeding out too, and have recently mailed out to friends, and delivered to local shops, 5 boxes of books. There are still many more that deserve to be read, rather than sit on the shelf gathering dust, so I'll have to revisit that project again soon.
With regard to your suggestion of a book swap... What do you think about folks posting a title or subject that they're looking for, as well? That could serve as a good prompt for someone who would be happy to pass one on, but who may not be into sorting through the whole collection just now. Just a thought...

Yes, 2Ls,*bg* in fact I was thinking you might like it. Shall I mark it as taken?

I don't know if they are accepting donations, but I heard a really sad story on npr, today, about a library in Upper Jay, NY, which lost almost all of its children's books and many others. Here's a bit about it:

A pile of books(sitting on the lawn, waiting for removal) shows that at the Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay. A third of the library's 10,000 book collection was destroyed.

"The first two levels of every shelf in the library and the majority of the children's section," said Marie-Anne Azar Ward of Wells Memorial Library.

One woman was quoted in another story, saying wherever she was in upstate NY, they'd lost about 1,000 antique books.

If I find out anything about donating, I will probably send them what I can.
