I had the same problem, with Win7, getting sound to my television that is also the monitor. I had to hook up a separate set of computer speakers on the computer to use when viewing my Netflix account on the television/monitor. The HDMI cable should have transmitted all data, picture and sound, but it didn't.

Try clicking on the speaker volume icon (hopefully it's in your tray), then click on "Mixer" to show the different devices available. Make sure the volume of your desired device isn't set to zero. These things don't seem to sync with the speaker volume, so sometimes they get zeroed out. If this isn't it, sorry, I've got no other answers.

It sounds like mostly a hardware setup issue, but here is a set of freeware items to replace the standard sound control in both XP and Win 7. There may well be some control settings in it to help tweak things.

That doesn't work - clicking on the speaker icon to reach the equalizer. Nothing seemed to work, despite many attempts to get at a volume control.

Bill D comes up with some pretty useful programs, so you might want to give that one he suggests a try.

Try this:
You should find a speaker icon on the bottom-right corner of your screen
  • RIGHT-click that icon and select "playback devices" or "recording devices" - whichever applies.
  • Click on the device you want - make sure its status says "ready"
  • Click on the "set default" button below.
  • Click "OK"

I think I'm looking at standard Windows 7 software, but your results may vary. It could be what I'm looking at, is proprietary to my sound card.

Good luck.

I had a similar problem, and solved it using the trouble shooting facility in Control Panel.
