I'd like to learn some basic Appalachian clog dancing. I don't expect to find a local class so will probably teach myself through Youtube or something similar! Can anyone direct me to some useful info? such as what shoes to buy etc!

I would suggest you get a copy of Ira Bernstein's instructional DVD.

You should be able to see the man himself in action on you tube and I believe he is due in England again a a few months.

Jane,

If you check out Ira's web site you will see that he is appearing in Halifax, W. Yorks on 7th November. He will probably be doing a workshop then. I suggest you check it out.

Ira'll be appearing and doing workshops at the Gainsborough Old Time Festival in February 10-12.
This takes place at
Queen Elizabeth's High School
Morton Terrace
Gainsborough
Lincolnshire
DN21 2ST

I believe you're a banjo player, Jane. Ira appears with Riley Baugus - one of the finest of Old Time banjo players, which I think should appeal to you!

The Bootleggers in Scunthorpe have a banjo player, too - me!

Cheers
Ray

I am indeed an old time banjo player! I'd like to try and come to the Gainsborough festival. Will probably teach myself through a DVD or online tuition though due to lack of free time and transport, going to Scunthorpe would be difficult for me but thanks for the info. I'll look out for the Bootleggers at festivals etc.

Really? You mean ordinary tap shoes that I could buy from a dance shop. Is this the case for most Appalachian dancers?

Quote from The Bootleggers website

"They dance in traditional 'oxford' tap shoes and use the metal taps on the toes and heels to beat out the rhythm "

but then what do I know I'm only in the band

I'll have to get some new glasses.
I opened this thread wondering what "Appalachian dog dancing" was.
