Song suggestions for a nude singaround?

13 Sep 11 - 04:39 AM (#3222350)
Subject: Song suggestions for a nude singaround?
From: Will Fly

If you were to participate in a nude singaround (though I can't really imagine you baring your soul in public) what traditional style songs might you expect to hear which would be appropriate for the occasion?

I suppose mine would be "If I Had A Hammer".

Strange what thoughts arise while eating the morning muesli...

My second tune would be "The Bonny Breast Knot". I'd also like to play "The Star Above The Garter" - but there'd be no garter...

I remember a song from a review - song title

"Mine's bigger than yours is".

But I'm not following the Lakes of Shailin analogy although I know the Nic Jones recording.

Male Bonding Song

G-------------------------------C
When we learned, it was a shocking re-ve-lation
----D--------------------------------G
That somehow as men we simply hadn't grown;
----------------------G7--------------C
So we looked at all you women, and your pride in feminism,
-------D7-------------------------G
And we started up a movement of our own.
-----C—D-G-------C---------D
Now we are men, and proud to be men;
---G---------C-----------D
We meet every Sa-tur-day at three;
----------G---------------------G7
And we ex-plore with great per-sis-tence,
---C
Our mas-cu-line existence,
--------D----------------------------------G
Beat our drums, and run off naked through the trees.

Chorus:

G-------------------------------------C
Oh, we all go running naked through the trees,
---D-----------------------G
As naked as a jaybird, if you please,
-----------------------G7
Oh, we throw off all our wrappings,
----------C
And with private parts a-flapping,
----D-----------------------------G
We all go running naked through the trees!

Yes, every weekend we all meet deep in the forest,
Where we beat our drums and fashion spears from trees;
And with our faces painted, we all get re-acquainted
With our atavistic masculinity.
For we are men and proud to be men,
We meet every Saturday at three;
And we flaunt with great pretension
Those long penile extensions,
As we all go running naked through the trees...

I guess we spent too long pretending we were something we were not,
While we hid our inner turmoil and our strife;
You thought we had a bed of roses though we stood with runny noses,
Pressed up hard against the window pane of life.
Now we are men and damn proud to be men,
We meet every Saturday at three;
And if you think it's just depravity,
You don't know what it's like to be,
A man gone running naked through the trees (It hurts!)...

Charley Noble

to continue..
A lady fair was walking along the banks o' Clyde,
The crystal tears fell frae her e'en as I passed by her side;
I saw her wav'ring bosom, these words being kind and true;
She said, "I'm afraid my Willie's slain at bloody Waterloo."

A sodger there was walking; he did the fair maid spy.
He said, "My dear, what aileth thee? Thy bosom doth heave high."
"I've lost my ain dear Willie, he's the lad I do lo'e true.
And I hae nae heard frae Willie lad since he sailed for Waterloo. "

"What were the marks your Willie wore?" the sodger did enquire.
"He wore a Hielan bonnet, with a feather standing high.
His big broadsword hung by his side o'er his dark suit o' blue,
These were the marks my Willie wore when he sailed for Waterloo. "

"If that's the marks your Willie wore, I saw his dyin' day.
Six bay'nets pierced his tender briest afore that he doon lay.
Then haudin' oot his dying hand, cried, 'Some Frenchman's slain me noo.'
'Twas I that closed your Willie's e'en at bloody Waterloo."

"Oh Willie, lovely Willie! " -- and she could say nae mair,
She threw herself doon on the ground, those awfu' tidings bare.
"Death open wide your jaws and swallow me up too!
Since my Willie lies a mould'ring corse at bloody Waterloo."

"Stand up stand up, my fair maid; my dearest, dinna froon!
An op'nin' up his great coat, his tartans they hung down;
His big broadsword hung by his side o 'er his dark suit o' blue,
"I am your long-lost Willie lad wha' sailed for Waterloo.

"Stand up stand up, my fair maid; my dearest, dinna froon! "
An op'nin' up his great coat, his tartans they hung down;
"Noo since we're met we'll never part till death shall us divide
And hand in hand in wedlock banns along the banks o Clyde. "

I can suggest a LIKELY place to have a nude sing around - a Clothing-Optional folk festival. I first heard about this from Sue Trainor, in the Hot Soup trio. I found the whole concept a bit er... chilling, but Sue said the audience did put jackets or blankets on in the chillier part of the evenings. I believe she mentioned that autoharp guru Bryan Bowers had played this festival as well, though I wouldn't swear to that.

The observation the Hot Soup ladies made was along the lines that it was a whole new way of being nervous, because that old "just imagine your audience in their underwear/naked" wouldn't work QUITE the same way in making the performer more at ease with their audience.

It also seems that acapella would work best with au nautural. *I* wouldn't want to get all sweaty all over my instruments, but then I'd be nice to the universe and not appear in public without decorative apparel covering the bigger bits.

Here's something I wrote a few years ago when our neighbourhood was afflicted with a very peculiar kind of voyeur. It goes to the tune of Secret Love.

Once I caught a peeping Tom,
Who strove my naked form to see.
Can you believe that anyone
Would sink to such depravity?

Yet he peered behind parked cars,
Through night-time binoculars,
Beneath the canopy of stars,
That were watching over me.

Now he's climbed up in my highest tree.
Slipped on the mossy bark and down crashed he.
Concussed, nonplussed. Flat on the floor.
Now this peeping Tom can't peep straight anymore.

Actually naked is fine. I used to live near a nudie beach in Byron Bay, and found it much more pleasant than the clothed ones. No sand in the swimmers and much more comfortable not to have to lie around in wet ones.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the naked body, and that goes for all shapes and sizes.

Seems to me any song at all would do. If everyone was nude, why would it even matter any longer? You'd find this out quickly enough if everyone's clothes vanished. All of a sudden "nude" would not be "nude" any longer, it would simply be normal (meeting the norm), ordinary, unremarkable, prosaic, and not sexy in the least.

But I realize this is just a search for amusing song title possibilities...so carry on. ;-)

Hawk, you're right, of course. On both counts.

I can vouch for the non-extraordinary, non-sexual nature of nudist scenarios such as nude beaches.   In fact, I'd say beaches where people run around in thongs and string bikinis are much more sexually titillating than the nude beaches I've frequented. (It's kind of like clothing offers a sort of protection of personal space that often invites much more intrusion into such space than is accepted or tolerated when those barriers are removed.   People (especially men) do things such as staring at or even touching parts of people's anatomies far more openly and freely when everyone is wearing clothes than when they're nude.

But on count two, you're also right.   This is just a silly thread about what one might SING if we were all nude. : )

L.H., did you know this one? your reminded me of the last verse.

The Natural Girl For Me
Words and Music by Tom Paxton

All over this great big city,
Can't find a woman who's nice and pretty.
They all look like a page in a magazine.
Legs are long and they eat like a sparrow.
Figures stick to the straight and narrow.
Top and bottom are the same as in between.

[Cho:]
Show me a pretty little number,
When she walks, she rolls like thunder,
Eyes as deep and dark as the deep blue sea.
Round right here and round right there,
Pretty red lips and her very own hair,
Wrap her up, she's the natural girl for me.

Went down to a coffeehouse palace,
Met a little lady and her name was Alice.
She had friends and her friends had her it seems.
Face was dirty and her sweater was baggy,
Pants were tight and her hair was shaggy,
I've seen her kind on college football teams.

[Cho:]

Way up in a penthouse pretty,
Thirteen miles above the city,
I met a lady from a wealthy family.
She could cuss like a real longshoreman,
She was making eyes at the doorman.
She made a most unusual offer to me.

[Cho:]

Way up at a Broadway party,
Met a little lady who was very arty,
She took me home to see her studio.
She took out her paints and she whispered to me,
She said that she wanted to do me.
Some of that paint will never come off, I know.

[Cho:]

I just thought that it might be appropriate to mention the monthly folk session in Todmorden that takes place at "Bare Arts".

It is an establishment that twins the brewing and sale of real ale with an art gallery of paintings of nudes, and is a very welcoming place to visit! It's easy to find as it's opposite the Morrison's supermarket and painted bright pink.

Rambling, Gambling Willie

Come around you rovin' gamblers and a story I will tell
About the greatest gambler, you all should know him well
His name was Will O'Conley and he gambled all his life
He had twenty-seven children, yet he never had a wife
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

He gambled in the White House and in the railroad yards
Wherever there was people, there was Willie and his cards
He had the reputation as the gamblin'est man around
Wives would keep their husbands home when Willie came to town
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

Sailin' down the Mississippi to a town called New Orleans
They're still talkin' about their card game on that Jackson River Queen
"I've come to win some money," Gamblin' Willie says
When the game finally ended up, the whole damn boat was his
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

Up in the Rocky Mountains in a town called Cripple Creek
There was an all-night poker game, lasted about a week
Nine hundred miners had laid their money down
When Willie finally left the room, he owned the whole damn town
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

But Willie had a heart of gold and this I know is true
He supported all his children and all their mothers too
He wore no rings or fancy things, like other gamblers wore
He spread his money far and wide, to help the sick and the poor
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

When you played your cards with Willie, you never really knew
Whether he was bluffin' or whether he was true
He won a fortune from a man who folded in his chair
The man, he left a diamond flush, Willie didn't even have a pair
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

It was late one evenin' during a poker game
A man lost all his money, he said Willie was to blame
He shot poor Willie through the head, which was a tragic fate
When Willie's cards fell on the floor, they were aces backed with eights
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

So all you rovin' gamblers, wherever you might be
The moral of the story is very plain to see
Make your money while you can, before you have to stop
For when you pull that dead man's hand, your gamblin' days are up
And it's ride, Willie, ride
Roll, Willie, roll
Wherever you are a-gamblin' now, nobody really knows

I'd suspect that "Steel Drivin' Man" should be good for a chuckle or two to lighten the mood.

The CW "If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me" likely wouldn't go over well with actual "naturists" as they tend to be rather "conservative" (in the non-political sense) with respect to sexual suggestiveness; but for a "pretend naughty" group sing (like some skinny-dippings) it might be okay.

"(Gimme That) Old Time Religion" sometimes includes:

Let me worship like the Dru-ids
Drinking stange exotic flu-ids
Runnin' naked through the wo-ids
It's good enough for me.

A question that arises is that if there are to be instrumentalists participating will there being anyone bold enough to play a squeeze box? (Even at arms length? - or maybe we should say "chest high"?)

John

This summer I swam in a public place
And a reservoir to boot.
At the latter I was informal
At the former I wore my suit,
I wore my swimming suit.

I didn't read the whole thread. Forgive me if Loudon's Swimming Song has already been posted.

How ones's sins come home to roost.

I thought, "Who started this silly thread?" as I opened it and - lo and behold! The OP was me...

What's sad - like many of these older threads - is seeing the number of names from 5 years ago who don't seem to post much, if at all, any more.

1812 (Derek Craft& Geoff Bodenham) (see link) used to sing one about being booked to do a gig at a nudist camp. Based on the concept of Django Rheinhardt & Staphane Grapelli gigging at same. In DR & SG's case they debated and decided to turn up nude. The audience had probably debated and turned up clothed.

Sadly 1812 have long stopped performing and Geoff I know died last year.

If you can find the lyrics it was a hoot. Can't remember the title.

There was a preacher who wanted to do something different to re awaken his congregation's interest in coming to church.
He announced that next Sunday, he wanted everyone to come dressed in such a way that others could guess the hymn they were thinking of when they dressed up.
Next Sunday, the first to show up was a beautiful, well endowed young woman, stark naked. When asked what she represented she said "Just as I am." Next came a young man wearing nothing but a skirt made of grass and weeds. Preacher asked what hymn he had in mind and he said, "I was thinking of "Bringing in the sheaves, but, if you don't get Just as I am out of here I'll be coming through the rye."

The playing technique of the rommelpot or zambomba would make it rather appropriate:

Kendall's post led me to create a truly inspired variant on the ageless classic.

If a laddy
Meet a Lassy,
Wading through the muck,
If a lady
Meet a Lassy
Will they stop to kiss?

Also from music hall:

IT'S ALL RIGHT IN THE SUMMERTIME

My old man is a very funny chap
He's an artist in the Royal Academy
He paints pictures from morning until night
Paints them with his left hand, paints them with his right
All his subjects, take a tip from me
Are very "Eve and Adam"y
And I'm the model that has to pose
For his pictures every day

Chorus: And it's all right in the summertime
In the summertime it's lovely
While my old man's painting hard
I'm posing in the old back yard
But oh, oh in the wintertime
It's another thing you know
With a little red nose, and very little clothes
And the stormy winds do blow

One day I am Cupid with a dart
And another day a fairy beautiful
I pose as Venus rising from the sea
In the water-butt with the water to my knee
Then he hangs me out upon the line
You see I have to be so dutiful
As I hang there, oh, he paints me as
An angel in the sky (Chorus)

My old man, oh, he plays a funny game
And I've only just begun to tumble him
All day long he's running out of paint
But the paint is whisky, don't you think it ain't
These are all the clothes I've got to wear
But I've made up my mind to humble him
I'll take a walk up the West one day
Just dressed up as I am (Chorus)

Written and composed in 1902 by George Everard & Alan Murray
Performed by Vesta Victoria (and Judy Cory)
