From: Richard Bridge If you go past Torremolinos and on towards Puerto Banus and turn inland there used to be a restaurant that did country music - if that is your thing. Last time I was there we were so desperate for acoustic music that we did drive up there - only to find it shut as we were late in season. You probably only have to look roughly like a tourist to have a dozen extras from a Lorca play playing flamenco near you and looking offended if you do not pay them. That certainly used to be the norm. You can't usually hear it though because the Spaniards use horns more than brakes. And of course if you are female there will be a hundred waiters trying to look like Jean-Claude Van Damme (because they are too short to look like Schwarzenegger) making bad rhymes about moon and June. |

There is the touristy part which concentrates itself around the coast, and there is the old town which is a little off the beaten track. I have not been there for a few years but back then you would certainly find plenty of "trad" music. However it would be the traditional Spanish music. There were a number of Spanish bars that featured "folk" music and not just "tourists flamenco". Can't recall any of the names now but I am sure that you should be able to find something if you look hard enough. Remember though that Spanish bars and restaurants in the South tend to open late in the evening - earliest 10.00pm and many at or after midnight. Cheers MikeL2 |

Mind you, you have to be off the main drag and usually late at night. It is there and in unexpected places. My highlights were a group of old folks dancing and singing flamenco while waiting for a bus, and a similar party in a hotel bar who suddenly broke out into songs from the Civil War. Amazing place Spain. |
