I carried all my belongings, screens, computer, phone, etc. to my new desk without a problem. Then (And I don't want to hear that I am too old to be crawling around under a desk setting up a network!) I crawled around under my desk and got everything set up. BUT as I tried to get from my knees to my feet, I pushed a bit hard with my big toe and it went "Crack!". I don't believe that it is broken but it is a lovely shade of purple and makes it impossible for me to wear shoes. I will see what the morning brings but unless Jacqui is willing to drive me from location to location, I am walking nowhere. I see slippers in my future at work for a while. eeing stars. Distributed the PMFF programs and performer/staff/volunteer badges, sang only one song to give more time to festival goers, and even took a few pictures. (Posted 3 at Facebook last night -- needed to get to sleep!) It's gray, but the rain may be kept at bay today...more likely we can avoid it tomorrow. I've got my trusty sou'wester hat just in case... It was packed, but civilized enough so folks who wanted to sing got a chance. I just got home from the concert--one of the BEST EVAH! People sat in the un-folded chairs. We put out more chairs, then somebody brought in a bench, and there were STILL some folks standing! Great Bay Sailor was wonderful. I know the guys, but they sounded better than ever. (Loved 'Hartland Point!) John Roberts was his always amazing self with enormous repertoire. Gordon Bok: suede voice, kind humor, and those lovely guitars. I could have stayed all night... which I very nearly did. There was a discussion of how to get back to the traffic circle, and something like 35 people all had different opinions. Me, I figured if I got somewhere familiar, I'd be fine. I joked that I should go out and get my bearings, then come back. I should have. 30 seconds of driving, and I knew where I was. (Didn't stop me from making a wrong turn, but I KNEW where I was.) Peter, if you read this, you don't want to go left on Rt 1, because you'll end up in Hampton Beach or Seabrook or maybe even Massachusetts. Fine for you, sucks for everybody else. Tomorrow's going to be a fun day. If you're close enough, you should try to get here. (I did manage to forget two canvas chairs, but I can swing by the church. Sunday morning the should be open...(d'oh)) |

I should remember to save it to the computer or something before I hit "Submit Message"...cheap insurance. Anyway, here goes at reconstructing it... Despite some early confusion about where "Both Sides of the Pond" with John Roberts and Chris Maden was to take place (scheduled for the garden of the Warner House, the Discover Portsmouth Center was the rain venue and the morning had been decidedly iffy; the garden was still quite damp), we got it sorted out. Lovely hearing John and Chris trade songs accompanied by their concertinas. We even had sun and blue sky for a bit. The Press Room open sing was spectacular! I've seen this sing even more crowded, but we seemed to find seating or standing room (seating became more fluid towards the end) for the singers. The energy and pace started strong and continued for the entire sing, making the rafters roar and rapidly moving from singer to singer around the room. I think I only sang one song ("Nine Times A Night"), so that singers from out of town could have enough turns. Great concert despite the through-the-roof humidity and (especially after the break) steady rise in temperature. We hoped that the widely opened windows would contribute a breeze, but it couldn't make up for the number of (very warm) bodies in the hall. I heard later that the overflow crowd could hear quite well through those open windows. Fans would have been too loud -- the sound in the hall is a bit mushy at best -- soft with no edges. Found the sign on the stage door amusing; something to the effect "Please keep door closed to keep the heat in." Really looking forward to today's singing. What a glorious weekend! From my perspective things went very smoothly, and we lucked out on weather, well maybe too hot and humid for the Saturday evening concert. I'm a little fried now but I see that already some good folks have begun posting photos on their Facebook pages. I'll start editing Judy's pixs tomorrow and post them as an album; I know she got some nice shots. Our abandoned cats were pleased to see us, and hadn't trashed the place in our absence. Out neighbor reported a gigantic skunk on our back porch while we were away. Fortunately our cats did not attempt to tackle it, and it failed to make it through the cat door. I don't think we had any actual rain showers at all, even on Saturday (although the dampness from the humidity sort of made up for that -- Tom certainly didn't need a humidifier in his concertina case!). I haven't yet finished IDing, let alone posting, my pictures from yesterday. (Friday and Saturday are on my Facebook page -- friend "Linn Schulz" if you want to see them -- please include your nom de Mudcat.) In the course of an hour I went from the sublime to the ridiculous -- the absolute best venue to the hardest work of my performing career. Tom's and my spot at the Portsmouth Athenaeum was wonderful, as it usually is. The Athenaeum's acoustics are a delight, the audience attentive, the host a great and complimentary friend, and the ambiance both historic and beautiful. From there we went to nail down the sort of open sing with performers rotating through at the Rusty Hammer. Unlike other years, this year we were in competition with a LOUD crowd of football fans watching the game on three large screen TVs. Initially, we had a handful of festival goers -- and, alas, none of them joined in on choruses. It was my lone voice and Tom's concertina accompaniment until Bruce MacIntyre arrived with reinforcements and rescued us. (Bruce...any possibility of getting combat pay? Just asking...) It ended up a rousing session. Only two patrons left ("I thought we came to watch the game, not to listen to music") but we sucked in others with the music (and somebody noted that the team started winning after we started singing). I'll probably post more this evening, but I've still got other stuff to do before I head to work. Linn |
