The second line [I think] goes, I'll have a hat when I go out. Nothing else comes to mind at the moment, but maybe that will help someone else along.

OK, I know I did not intentionally post that second message, and I am also sure that Frank did not REALLY mean to post his original six times! I think I have figured out how it happened, though. Before going on to anything else, I hit reload in order to see if anything else had been added to the list before moving on to something else. Then a message asked me if I wanted to repost form data. Well, I had no clear idea what it was talking about and assumed that hitting yes was just part of the reload process. It is, but with the consequence you see above. Next time, I will say NO!!

I can only remember the chorus offhand:

I had a hat when I came in, and I hung it on the rack; I'll have a hat when I go out, or I'll break somebody's back! I'm a decent man, I am, I am, And I don't want to shout-- But I had a hat when I came in, and I'll have a hat when I go out.

I know I have the rest somewhere--I'll try and find them.

Charlie Chamberlain used to sing that on "Don Messer's Jubilee", maybe it's on one of the D.M. Jubilee albums?

1. Casey wore his brand new hat to Murphy's wake last night.
Someone stole that hat and, Lord, it started up a fight.
Casey smashed the furniture, the radio as well.
He nearly woke the corpse up, as he began to yell:

CHORUS: I had a hat when I came in. I hung it on the rack,
And I'll have a hat when I go out, or I'll break somebody's back.
I'm a peaceful loving man, I am, and I don't want to shout,
But I had a hat when I came in and I'll have a hat when I go out.

2. Casey kept on shouting. Lord, they couldn't keep him quiet.
Someone phoned up for the cops just to come and stop the riot.
Two cops then burst in the room, but Casey laid 'em out.
As he threw them through the window, they could both hear Casey shout: CHORUS

3. Casey kept on swingin' until one-eyed Paddy Flynn
Socked him on the whiskers with a great big rolling pin.
He knocked poor Casey senseless. Man, it was an awful clout,
But as he lay there unconscious, Casey kept on shouting out: CHORUS

there 'tis. That's got it!

I learned of this song from my Dad. He used to sing it, but didn't know much of the verses. I posted a thread on Mudcat about a year ago, and sure enough, Kendall came to my rescue. In fact, I didn;t know the melody to the verse, so he said, "that's no problem, here's my telephone number, call me up and I'll sing it for ya!" So I did! I got out my little boom box recorder, put Kendall on the speaker phone of my cheap AT&T answering machine, and captured the melody (Yankee accent and all)!

Great song. We play it pretty frequently and the crowd always loves it!

I've looked around a lot, and haven't found any recordings of this song other than old 78s, and I'm not set up to deal with 78s. I hope somebody finds this one.
