23 Sep 11 - 06:46 AM (#3227619) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,harvey andrews I don't think I've quite come to that yet Bill! However, I am doing a final year on the road and finishing as a full timer Oct 2012 just short of 70 years old. It will be 50 years to the month since I first performed a self-written song as a student at a college do. I think you can just fade away until people ask "whatever happened to..." or you can announce a final fling and get to say thank you to the people who have supported you throughout your career, and that's what i've decided to do. It's a different folk world now to the one I entered in the 60's, plus some of my audience is beginning to be either leaving the planet, leaving the country or getting too infirm to leave home!!! I've loved every minute of it, but it just seems the right time, while I still have a voice, to call it a day. Gig details on my website, and if anyone would like a last appearance please e mail me at harvey@harveyandrews.com |
23 Sep 11 - 07:30 AM (#3227640) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: breezy Thanks Harvey for what you've given us and for your talent throughout my lifetime. I hope you enjoy and have a great year that will start from , when ? next May ? You surely cant start a final year as we enter autumn ? Must contact Tim Frost in Amersham, he who promoted Eric Bogle's final tour gig in Watford and is doing one in October with Martyn W-R and Dan MacKinnon Its never over , until its over, and there are new listeners every year |
23 Sep 11 - 07:44 AM (#3227646) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Bonnie Shaljean Congratulations on a wonderful performing life, Harvey, and for the rewards it has brought to so many. Enjoy your well-earned retirement, and remember it doesn't mean you can't make the odd visit from time to time. I know you'll always be more than welcome wherever you go. All the best wishes from Bonnie (and also, I know, Packie when I tell him) |
23 Sep 11 - 07:55 AM (#3227651) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Sandra in Sydney Eric & Martyn did a final tour of Australia a few years back, but you wouldn't know it - they both keep coming back! And any time Martyn sends me an email asking for a spot, I'm not going to say no. happy (semi) retirement, Harvey sandra |

23 Sep 11 - 12:26 PM (#3227801) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Bill D I do wish I'd had the opportunity to hear you 'live'..here in the US, but I will just have to be content with a few CDs and a friend who does the "Whisky bottle" song quite well. It never fails to move me. Have a great retirement! |

23 Sep 11 - 07:42 PM (#3228045) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,harvey andrews I've toured Canada and loved it, but the only time I set foot in America was on a trip to Belize to entertain the troops. Within minutes of arriving in the Washington airport bar with fellow musicians I found myself defending the BBC against an irate American who called it "Commie television".Red rag to a bull with me. It ended when a huge cop with a gun hove in view. I bought a souvenir T shirt and exited left! Basically, I'm tired of travelling and getting in to America is such a hassle these days with visas and passport etc that I couldn't face it. Sorry Bill D, but if you ever get over here I'll give you a personal concert in my living room! |
23 Sep 11 - 07:54 PM (#3228052) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Bill D Aww... I'm sorry anyone had to meet 'America' that way. Like every country, we have our lunatic fringe. I will certainly take you up on that offer....if.... |
23 Sep 11 - 08:03 PM (#3228056) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Leadfingers Bill - If you fly in to Heathrow I will drive you up to Harvey's for the personal concert - As long as I can listen as well !! |
23 Sep 11 - 08:11 PM (#3228061) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Bill D Such temptation! I may have to start saving pennies! (What? You say pennies won't do it? *sigh*) |
23 Sep 11 - 08:57 PM (#3228086) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Susanne (skw) Harvey, if that last offer is open to anyone who has not heard you for at least five years you can make sure your retirement will be rather busy ... As it probably isn't, I'll keep checking your website for dates and try to make my annual visit to the UK coincide with one of them. All the best and thank you for the music! |
24 Sep 11 - 05:09 AM (#3228209) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Big Al Whittle Yes indeed congratulations onthe vision and seeing through.A magnificent career, full of achievement. Are you retiring anywhere nice - will you be doing any more of Malc Stents shows, or is it the club scene , that you're retiring from? |
24 Sep 11 - 05:12 AM (#3228210) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Dear Harvey, I will always remember the great show you did at 'Folk on The Pier' in Norfolk, a few years back, which I was lucky enough to see. What a wonderful evening you gave us all that night. Thank you for you brilliant and so often, moving, songs and I wish you all the best for the future. With love Lizzie :0) x |
07 Oct 11 - 04:48 PM (#3235510) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,noddy Thanks for all the music and looking forward to reading all you stories. My wife Angie played support for you on many occasions, be it just a floor spot at the White Swan in Manchester 20 or so years ago or at that mad festival organised by Mike Raven in a stately home somewhere in Shrops or in the much better Burntwood. Stay well. |
07 Oct 11 - 06:54 PM (#3235564) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,Bill the sound Thanks for all the good gigs Harvey. I hope you enjoy your retirement as much as we enjoyed your performances. All the best Bill (PS Hope to catch another gig before you retire) |
29 Apr 12 - 05:13 AM (#3344687) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,PaulQ Thanks Harvey for many wonderful years of wonderful music, I first saw you in the Swan Pub in Wrexham around 1973 when you played with Graham Cooper. from that moment on I was a fan. Over the years I was lucky enough to see you a number of times including a very intimate session in the Encott Centre in Llangollen when there was only about 20 of us there. I also remember a number of sessions at Theatr Clwyd in Mold one of which was interrupted by a Fire Alarm and we all had to go outside in the cold. Thank you once again for so many wonderful songs, I will have to be content to listen to the CD's I have collected, would you ever consider publishing the words and music for your songs after your retirement? |

29 Apr 12 - 02:18 PM (#3344851) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST An inspiration for many, Harvey can still teach us all a thing or a dozen. So many great songs, so many great performances, that doesn't come by itself, it takes graft; and few have ever grafted so hard at their art as Harvey. If anyone deserves a lifetime achievement award it'd be him, in my book - yet I hesitate to suggest it because I wish him an even longer time amongst us, plus I suspect that his creativity is still likely to bring up more gems. At least his more recent songs indicate this to be a very high probability. But he does deserve some quality time with the ones he loves too, so I don't know what to wish him; whatever he wishes himself, I guess. He sure earned it, and there's no fear that his absence from the stages will cause him to be forgotten. No way. I hope to say so many times yet, and in person too - but "Thanks, Teach!" |

30 Apr 12 - 01:08 PM (#3345308) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Mississippi Saxaphone Hope you follow the greats that have played on into their 80's and sometime 90's appearing from time to time to suit themselves and that you continue to write songs. I still remember your bookings at the Maypole Folk Club in Leeds that I ran in the late 60's up to 1975 and whilst the scene has changed there will always be a need for good songwriters, something many aspire to but few achieve. |
01 May 12 - 03:15 AM (#3345525) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Arthur_itus Harvey did a great show at Faldingwporth last December. Somebody to look up to and learn from. He is an entertainer, not soembody who just gets on stage and just sings. I will wish for Harvey that Birmingham City win the PL (well I don't really, as I am a Villa supporter), but he deserves it. |
01 May 12 - 05:01 PM (#3345826) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: Anne Lister Sorry to hear this, Harvey, but after that long long chat we had a few years back now I'm not altogether surprised. You will be greatly missed, so I hope you'll be tempted back for gigs from time to time, even if you're no longer a full timer! Anne |
02 May 12 - 01:07 PM (#3346156) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: The Sandman I am sorry to say I have never had the pleasure of seeing you, but I have enjoyed some of your songs, happy retirement.Dick Miles |
24 Jun 13 - 09:53 AM (#3529779) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,Alan Baker If the others who offered to meet you at heath row can't make it. I will. And I will try to keep you away from our lunatic fringe. Some Americans still can't understand that we are still the only country that stands by your country despite some disappointments from you in the past. At the same time we have a lot of people over here that blame America if the wind blows too hard. with a bit of luck we can avoid them most of the time. |

28 Aug 13 - 06:50 AM (#3553661) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,Capo da Monty He was brilliant at Saltburn Festival a couple of weeks ago. Said he didn't fancy the long distance trips to gigs anymore so might do something within a 50 mile radius of his home in Shropshire if asked. Really good to see him again! CdM |
28 Aug 13 - 07:09 PM (#3553924) Subject: RE: Harvey Andrews Retiring From: GUEST,Guest - Betsy Sorry can't Log in - Mudcat must be getting maintenance or some such. Anyway, only to reiterate what CdM says (above). He gave a truly great performance when I saw him at Saltburn - (he sang at more than one venue) and I saw him on the Sunday at the Emmanuel Hall. Great presence ,and warm-hearted delivery of his well structured songs. The audience loved him and it was truly a marvellous One Hour set. Don't give up just yet Harvey - there are still people who need to see and hear your "magic". Best Of Luck whatever you decide. Betsy |
