Hi All,

Shameless promotion alert!

I wanted to let you know that the new CD by Rapunzel and Sedayne, Songs from the Barley Temple, is in the shops from this coming Monday 26th September. You can hear a couple of samples and read all about it on the Folk Police Rapunzel and Sedayne page. You can buy the CD from all the usual outlets or directly from the Folk Police shop... or get it as a download from iTunes, Amazon etc or as a high quality download in the format of your choice from the Folk Police Bandcamp page.

According to fRoots, "it's, out of the blue, one of the best, most intriguing, simultaneously fascinating and entertaining debuts out of the UK folk scene in a long time." and who are we to argue with that?

Ok, this is going to turn into a love in.

I have to confess to being friends of R & S. They came to the Beech when we first started and sang amazing songs with strange arrangements and magic instrumentation. So in a way I am not totally independent of ear on this.

I was apprehensive on getting the CD. My prefered music is beery choruses, country dance, then Whapweasel and folk rock. This album is extraordinary! Unusual versions of known songs and for me strange old songs I have not heard before. The potent mix of Rapunzel's voice and banjo, the range of instruments that Sedayne calls up to bring out the deep drama in many of these songs and the sometimes unearthly voice he weaves around the storytelling is simply original.

It makes no sense to me to compare anyone to anyone else. We listen and the music either does something for you or it doesn't. I suspect that people who enjoy the current crop of most popular singers and musicians will enjoy this just as much.

Buy the CD it is startling.

Some years ago Rachel wrote a modern gloss on The Housecarpenter which we now feature as Housecarpenter Part Two. It takes it's name from the opening line I curse the day that he walked back into my life.... It's the only track on the album which isn't (strictly speaking) live, using the vocal from a different take against the Kaossilator drone from another. We also looped the last line on the coda as it (according to the Sunday Times) dissolves into a pagan fug though the effect we were going for was a blue-lagoon serenity akin to Sailing By - we were even thinking of licensing a sample!

I wonder that no one has asked yet about the image on the cover because it's an interesting story. Basically, we pinched it out of a rancid old beer-soaked encyclopia we found on the floor of branch of Wetherspoons in Preston one day we were talking about the cover of the album. Picking it off the floor it fell open and here's this perfect image which reminded us of the cover of Unknown Pleasures but had the text from the other side soaking through like some wierd Da Vinci code, so we took it home and scanned it and worked on it on the computer until it's full glory & inner mystery was revealed. On one level it's secular & scientific, but on another it's folkloric too, the World Tree as a Mythological Archetype, Ygdrassil, or just the same old tree in which the Porcupine sits looking keenly to some unseen horizon. On the top, however, sits the Squirrel and the Owl with a Bat & Bird flitting around, far above the spermatozoa & discarded novelty condoms that wash around at the bottom. But what does it all mean? Something along the lines of : Life is Splendid - and nothing ever happens without being the consequence of that which went before; and that Tradition is alive and well in everything we see and touch...

Nice to hear a bit of R&S on Radio 3's 'Late Junction' the other night. If you're not familiar with this show, it's on Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays. Times vary a bit, but it's around 11pm to 12.30 am, or a little later. It's a mix of different musical genres, often a bit quirky, and has a fair amount of folk music - often more 'real' folk than you get on a certain Radio 2 programme, and without the endless superlatives.

What a welcome ray of sushine this CD is on a folk scene that seems increasingly dour and grey. Inspired arrangements guarantee to raise goosebumps while enchanting and and possessing the senses. It may not all be to my personal taste (I'm not quite sure about the banjo arrangement on some tracks, but it will probably grow on me) but, in particular, Owld Gryre Song and Riverdance rank alonside the very best British folk music that I've ever heard. It demonstrates the inestimable value of orginiality and inventiveness in folk music. All-in-all, a masterpiece.

That answers that one; I was going to ask where you got it from, theleveller... We were in Probe yesterday (Liverpool) trying to persuade them to stock it by pointing out the review in the new edition of Shindig which we'd just bought off him (£7!). He said he'd look into it...

Thanks for kind words anyway. More conventional folk-minds might look askance at our approach, but as Zappa said 'Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.' Not that we do this intentionally of course, it just turns out that way naturally, given our inspirations, roots & natural inclinations.   One of our recent promoters insisted our approach was a little too weird for his particular norm, but, but in all honesty SFTBT is our attempt at making a normal folk album, albeit ever so slightly Post-Revival in its approach. You want 'weird' (man!) check out A Pentacle of Pips - but even then our intention is a joyful celebration of traditional folk fruitfulness from 3,500 BC to the present.

Yes, well, step outside the stockade of folk revival conventions and into the forests and badlands of alternative interpretations and you're an outlaw. To be honest, that's where I'm most comfotable and that's where, in my opinion, the music belongs. My own music has no legitimancy outside the small area that it represents and if it touches only a few people then it has been worthwhile.

Definitely Marmite Sedayne.

Half of our (fairly conservative) audience last weekend sat with their mouth's open going....."what the hell is this?".

The other (mainly younger) half sat there with their mouth's open going "this is amazing!".

Probably means that your music hits the mark that you would wish for it!

Judging by the artistes I've seen at KFFC I'd say that Paul's tastes are pretty wide and eclectic (with the exception of pianos). I think it stands out as a 'beacon' club - just a pity it's so far away or we'd be there more often.

I'd agree, TL - I'm just baffled about Paul's ideas on 'conservatism' on the one hand, and what is it about our music he thinks is so radical with respect of that - especially when the KFFC audience were so warm & responsive to our particular brand of folk 'n' fun.

Anyway, another new piece up at the Winterflora page today in merry anticipation of Advent. This is a sort of dance-raga-cum-carol, 100% improvised after certain rhythms & modalities of the 13th Century Cantigas de Santa Maria, here played on medieval fiddle (my new Vielle Vermell making its recording debut!) with frame drum, bells & vocalising from Rapunzel - so, pretty conservative on the whole I'd say...
