Opening the evening will be singer-songwriter Loretta Hagen. Call it "new-timey," call it "post-bluegrass," call it "string band music for the 21st century"—whatever the name, there's a revolution under way where string band traditions meet youthful creativity; look right to its center, and that's where you'll find Bearfoot. Bearfoot, originally formed in Alaska but now calling Nashville their home, is one of the leading young bands reshaping American roots music. Drawing from a broad range of music styles including bluegrass, old-time, folk, country, Cajun, blues and western swing, the female-fronted acoustic quintet delivers a powerful live show. Bearfoot shows feature winningly intimate lead vocals, intricate arrangements of award-winning original songs, tight harmonies, impressive instrumental prowess, even the occasional twin-fiddle tune punctuated with Appalachian flat-foot dancing. Following the success of Bearfoot's 2009 Compass debut, "Doors And Windows", which debuted at # 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart, the band released their latest recording in September. "American Story" (Compass Records) also introduces three new members of the band, showing off both their distinctive voices and the impressive level of integration the quintet's already achieved. Lead singer, songwriter and guitar player Nora Jane Struthers is the best known of the additions, having already released one stellar album highlighting her thoughtful songwriting and cool, clear voice—and having won the tough Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition in 2010 with her Bootleggers, a group featuring the second new member of Bearfoot, bass player P. J. George. Rounding out the revamped lineup is guitarist/vocalist Todd Grebe, previously known for his work fronting the acoustic honky-tonk group Todd Grebe & Cold Country. Coupled with the instrumental prowess and vocal harmonies of longtime members Angela Oudean (fiddle) and Jason Norris (mandolin), the new Bearfoot is reminiscent of Nickel Creek one moment and early Dixie Chicks the next (both groups with whom they share the title of former Telluride Bluegrass Band Champions). Opening the evening will be Loretta Hagen. Known for her rich alto voice and heart tugging songs, Loretta Hagen is a singer songwriter whose musical career spans over two decades. Weaving folk, country, rock and blues, Loretta writes songs that possess strong, catchy melodies and passionate, poignant lyrics. The NJ based performer has an uncanny ability to make an audience feel right at home, leaving them smiling, laughing, crying, and singing along, as she reflects about love, loss, courage, hope and perseverance. The Fair Lawn Community Center is located at 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn, NJ.
