Mishearing Lyrics

I guess this belongs in BS, but I'm not sure how to flag it as that.
Anyway, there is a pop song called "Brand New Me" by Colbie Caillat where what I hear is not what any lyrics lookup agree with.
Colbie has a wonderful voice and good sense of catchy rhythms (I sometimes like a "good" pop song).
Here's the problem:
The official lyrics read like this>
"I got the same ole friends got the same ole taste tell the same ole jokes give the same ole gifts "

But what I'm hearing after many listens is this>
"I got the same ole friends got the same ole tits tell the same ole jokes give the same ole grits"

Maybe I have a bootleg copy? ............
For the most part, music stuff goes in the music section, an non-music in the "BS" section. To select a tag for a new thread, use the dropdown menu on the thread creation page. I removed the "BS" tag from this thread and crosslinked with the other mondegreen threads.

You're experiencing a phenomenon known as the 'Mondegreen' - put the word into the Forum Search and you'll find lots!

Thanks Bernard, the Mondegreen stuff was an eye opener for me; never heard the term before. I love word plays!

Anyone old enough to remember "Have Gun Will Travel" ?
Richard Boone used to flash his business card with that as a hired gun.
A buddy of mine used to think that Paladin's first name was "WIRE": at the bottom of the card it said "Wire Paladin".

Is there a way to post a message with an audio clip on this forum?

If I could I will post Colbies' sound clip with the words in question and have a vote taken on what she is really singing.
I swear I have it right. ( As if anyone cares :)

Quite often a singer will change an original lyric , either as a joke , or for personal reasons . Without knowing either the artist or the song though , DONT take what I say as Gospel ! LOL

If the sound clip is on line then you can try to make a "blue clicky" as shown on the bottom of the reply box.

Leadfingers said,"Quite often a singer will change an original lyric, either as a joke, or for personal reasons."
It could also be because THEY misheard the lyrics. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded Jerry Jeff Walker's Mr. Bojangles, changing,"And he spoke right out," to "And the smoke ran out." I heard them 5 or 6 years ago and noticed that they sing the proper words these days. I guess someone pointed it out to them.

That's interesting PHJim - We actually stole that by bootlegging the 45 single in a record shop in Bermuda when it was in the charts , and I still have ' Spoke right out ' as transcribed back then !

I'd always sung (to myself as i've not done the song in public) the incorrect words to Carly Simon's You're So Vain. I thought it was "and when you're not, you're with someone who would steal all the wine from a close friend". The correct words read "you're with some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend". So I can imagine if you're taking a version down from performances or a recording and not reading the words it will be easy enough for it to change
