I refuse to put this news story up in the music section. It doesn't belong there. Click on the link to see a recording session for yourself. Then you'll understand.

My apologies to music lovers....

William Shatner covers Black Sabbath on new CD
Sept. 28, 2011, 1:42 PM EST
Zap2it

Emmy-winning actor William Shatner reminds us of our grandpa -- he's funny and lovable, but sometimes we worry that he's just completely lost it. And now he's singing "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath.

Shatner is releasing another one of his signature spoken-word(ish) cover albums, this time collecting famous fantasy/sci-fi-inspired tunes in a compilation called "Seeking Major Tom."

As usual, he delivers the famous tracks in that Shatner stop-and-go amelodic style. However, for Black Sabbath's "Iron Man," he thought it wise to sing the melody (the operative word here being "thought"). Shatner released the behind-the-scenes footage on his YouTube channel.

Now remember, Shatner can hear the backing track in his headphones but we cannot, making this all the more delightful. Be sure you've already swallowed your morning coffee. Watch below:

YES!!!!!! This is, of course, incredible and awesome to the max. I swear...if Spaw sees THIS, he will finally grasp the genius in both Shatner AND Major Tom!

You're just suffering brief shock, because you are not used to encountering that degree of artistic mastery and sheer magnificence. You'll get over it in a bit and rush out and buy Shatner's new album.

Shit enriches the soil. From the soil we harvest life-giving crops. Shatner's extraordinary body of work is the raw fertilizer that enriches contemporary culture and enables us to move forward to a bright new future.

I suggest that everyone buy his new CD, listen to it with great care, and make use of the inspiration it provides to better their lives. And buy copies for your relatives too. They need Shatner just as much as you do. Hell, buy one for the dog! I did this for my Dachshund, and his fleas went away for good.

The Canadian prison system tried to get some but the request was turned down. Seems it was considered to be cruel and unusual punishment. Having witnessed his performance on that clip, I must agree.

If this was the ONLY thing Shatner EVER spawned through his prostrate and connected channels - It is well worth a CD.

William Shatner's Own Space Oddity

William Shatner returns to the recording studio for a new, space-themed spoken-word album, Seeking Major Tom. The two-disc set features a laundry list of popular musicians, from Lyle Lovett and Peter Frampton to Sheryl Crow and members of the '70s-era prog-rock bands Asia and King Crimson.

... Shatner tells NPR's Rebecca Roberts that Seeking Major Tom tells the story of the fictional astronaut in David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and what happens after he steps out of the space capsule.

"Well, I thought it would be fun to characterize what happened to him," Shatner says of the lost astronaut. "So I have him walking on the moon or being a space cowboy, thinking of his wife [who] 'blinded me with science.' Then things get darker and he's in the twilight zone. He queries God in 'Lost in the Stars' — why is this happening? And, ultimately, in the 20th song, he goes to hell with 'Iron Man' with Zakk Wylde."
---

Two sample tracks available at the link!!!

Also:

Shatner also has a new book, Shatner Rules, and is about to perform a one-man show across Canada. He's also directed a documentary about the actors who have played captains on Star Trek, fittingly called The Captains. It was sitting down with Patrick Stewart, Captain Pickard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, that Shatner says really helped him come to grips with his Star Trek past.

"I began to have a defense at what I perceived to be a form of derision towards Star Trek," Shatner says. "It irritated me, so that all these things like 'Beam me up, Scotty' would be a source of irritation. I realized that when delving into Patrick Stewart's career and his attitude. He taught me that I had been doing the wrong thing. I had applied myself as responsibly as I could in performing the role, but in the intervening years, I acquired an attitude, which I have striven to divest myself of."

Pretty good for an 80-year-old guy.

Florence Foster Jenkins.... Sings!

Note: It sounds even better if you open the page repeatedly during one listening and then you can hear FFJ singing a duet or a trio or a quartet along with herself!

It is a shame that she and Shatner weren't born during the same era. They could have collaberated and probably come up with some very memorable stuff.
