01 Oct 11 - 02:13 PM (#3232251) Subject: Possible Hardanger day in W Yorks UK From: johnadams I have the offer of a workshop/lecture/session led by Norwegian Hardanger fiddle player Britt Pernille Frøholm, who's visiting Huddersfield Music Festival to perform an experimental piece. She's looking to meet other fiddlers and maybe deliver a workshop session. It's still in the design stage and could be what people want it to be. Given that most of us don't own Hardangers it would be based on demonstration and a look at repertoire and style of playing. This would take place on Saturday 26th November at The Shop, Oldham Rd, Ripponden, West Yorks. Who might be up for it? Please don't react with 'sorry, too far away' - it just wastes bandwidth. |

So I'll refresh it with a stupid question. Are there similarities of technique between a Hardanger and other instruments with drone strings? There are quite a few Hudy Gurdy players around in Cheashire. Might they be interested? If so it might be worth advertising it at the Audlem Gurdy & Bagpipe day on Nov 11th. |

I don't think hurdy-gurdy players are going to learn much actual technique from Hardanger playing but they might be informed in lots of other ways. All sorts of musical activities benefit from looking widely don't they - for instance programming a synth. I'll see if I can get the word around to the Audlem event. I just need to get a dozen or so people interested in order to make it worth her while doing some thing. Hardanger's a bit super-specialist really! |

The drone strings on a hurdy-gurdy have two notches on the bridge, one where they can be set to sound (in contact with the wheel), another where the string is lifted off the wheel and not sounded. What about Nyckelharpas? Are the extra strings bowable or jsut sympathetic? Ross |

I went to a Scandinavian session in Sheffield before the summer and there were three hardangers there. The young lady in the middle of the picture above was one of them I think. Sam Sweeney plays of course - he might be a good contact. |
