BS: Footballers' tattoos ~ symbolism?

There is a fashion for league footballers to have one arm only heavily tattooed. I think it looks horrible. When I saw the player Formica with it the other day, I longed for a damp cloth to wipe the filth off [geddit?!].

But is there any symbolism, does anyone know, in which arm is chosen? I am reminded of the single-earring men's fashion some years back, when it was rumoured the in-people knew it was 'left for straight & right for gay'. Any such convention here, does anyone know?

Info, please. & opinions on the trend? Anybody think it looks nice? Or have any idea why they do it, if not for reasons I suggest above?

Yes, I noticed that a Para Corporal , whose photo appeared in the "Times" feature on recipients of the Military Cross etc , had one arm (his left , I think ) heavily tattooed in a similar style to that to which you allude . I think it is representative of a sort of "tribal membership ", a tangible sign of " belonging " to a certain group , clan , or organisation ; I have three tattoos from when , aged 16 , I had not long been in Her Majesty's Navy , and acted accordingly !

Contrary to popular opinion , these behaviours are not just restricted to what some uneducated persons might refer to as the "lower orders" ; indeed , one RN Captain I served under, Captain J C Y Roxburgh , sported a massive tattoo on one forearm , as, I believe , did HM King George the Fifth.

Personally , although obviously somewhat biased , (!) , I have no objection to the practice , although I draw the line (no pun intended ) at " cut along the dotted line " on someone's throat, or stars on the forehead. I also find ladies with discreet and well-executed tattoos rather splendidly erotic !!

Thanks, Bubbly. Yes; and what's more I remember when tattoos were confined to sailors, as I think was the case when HM George V had served. They showed originally, I would hazard, a good while back, that the mariner had visited those far-flung parts of the S Pacific where tattoos were part of the local culture, administered by skilled craftsmen from among the indigens of such parts; & became part of naval tradition thence. But then tattoo parlours, using electric needles and modern technology, opened up in high streets where the particular sort of demographic you refer to resided, and they caught on as a sort of fashion statement among the would-be toughie-looking. To climax as of now in these revolting, IMO, one-arm displays of solidarity. Do you think there is any L-R/Straight-gay indicator involved as I suggest above, perhaps? Or any other significance in what arm is chosen?

I agree, mind, that a pretty little or whevs on a pretty little lady's bare buttock can have an agreeable effect!

I think I'd like to be a dermatologist about 20 years from now who specializes in removing the tattoos of youth.

I believe one reason with sailors was to help identify body if you turned up washed ashore on a beach.

Maybe with these footballers is to help tell left from right.

Reminded of the Tony Husband 'Yobs' strip in Private Eye a while ago:

"I want 'I'm a hard bastard' tattoed on my forearm."

"OK. Come in." ...

"Call an ambulance ~ he's fainted."

I detest tattoos, as I have said on other threads, especially on good looking women. Why disturb or detract from or distract from the viewing pleasure?

Of COURSE I know personality and intelligence are the key factors in attractiveness but I find tattoos are an initial indication of "less" in those areas. Just me.

And, of course, I know whatever floats yer boat is none of my concern.

At Ohio State it means you traded a signed jersey for a nice "Motherfuckers Rule" tat on your arm. It also means the NCAA has probably suspended you and a dozen of your teammates and shitcanned your head coach.........

I hated losing Tressel but he bucked up in not reporting to the NCAA. The NCAA are, however, gigantic assholes trying to enforce an out dated system. The players are just dumb bucks for even thinking they could do that without being caught. Pryor on the other hand showed nothing but contempt for the whole thing which made it worse on all.

I've had my doubts about Pryor every since he played a nationally televised game with the name VICK printed under each eye right after Michael Vick got out of prison. I don't think these players did anything that heinous, swapping mementos for tattoos, and the system is antiquated, but I was disappointed in Tressel for trying to cover it up. He tried to save his season and lost his career. If he would have come forward when he was informed of the infractions, as the rules require, he might have lost a couple more games but his reputation as a straight shooter would have been intact.
