15 Oct 11 - 09:13 AM (#3239349) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: Richard Bridge Yes, I'm finding it slow, in patches, as if it's checking something before proceeding. It's like Norton antivirus used to be on email in the bad old days - send from your resident email client, it goes to Norton, Norton thinks about checking it, and finally sends it to the modem (those were the days, eh?) by which time the modem has got bored and hung up. It makes me wonder if some prophylactic measure has been installed on the 'cat. |

I guess it's all the add ons, ads, etc. It has just got more to do these days. Same all over the net. A necessary evil ;) |
15 Oct 11 - 09:50 AM (#3239365) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: Bonnie Shaljean Yes, chronic here, for the past few days :-( Other sites are OK so it's not my connection (which is pretty good anyway). In fact it got so bad I had to abandon the Cat and go do some actual Work. |

15 Oct 11 - 03:22 PM (#3239504) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: John MacKenzie I like my web sites fast, and my women slow. |
15 Oct 11 - 03:25 PM (#3239506) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: JohnInKansas There was a report that Max had to make some emergency equipment substitutions so a "lesser server" might have something to do with it. Also, I first noticed a delay in responses a little after the most recent off-line event, so there may be "repairs in process." It looks to me like the bottleneck is in the server queue, since I get a rather longer "waiting for response from mudcat," message than usual; but the transmission speed seems normal once I get to the top of the lineup. That might be helped if "somma youze guys" would go away and reduce the traffic density, but that never worked when I suggested it to the drivers in the next lane on the Seattle freeways, so I suppose it's not worth even a finger salute. I haven't looked at what kind of traffic load has been hitting here, but the time-lag between posts looks fairly normal, indicating not much change(?). John |

16 Oct 11 - 05:42 AM (#3239754) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: Bonnie Shaljean Much more than that for me, even on a different server & puter 35 km away. It obviously varies. Long waits for every page-change. (And it didn't take this message the first time I tried to submit.) |
17 Oct 11 - 03:10 PM (#3240377) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: GUEST, Richard Bridge on a different browser The improvement seems to have vanished. 17 Oct 11 - 07:35 PM (#3240516) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: Max It's a much bigger problem from where I sit. We lost our most powerful machine in the crash last month, and are very near to 100% capacity without her. Watching my resource monitor lately gives me the same feeling as when my kids are sick. I know, I'm a giant nerd... you have no idea... Been trying to reallocate resources, but haven't been able to make a dent. We're maxed out. I ordered a little hardware to get our whole database into RAM which should speed things up a great deal. Couple of days and she'll be snappy. I'm holding off on the purchase of a new server, for now, because mudcat 2.0 is on the horizon and relies on a completely, and I mean 100%, different schema than we have now. Strengthening the current infrastructure may not serve the next. Whole lot of action here at the cabin of solitude --the physical home of mudcat.org, Max, Merle and the monkeys. Wish I could fill you in on what's to come, but it has been shown that you can't be trusted. :) ...exciting times ahead to be sure. |

18 Oct 11 - 12:23 AM (#3240603) Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat sloooooooooooooow From: Max Hmmm, I coulda swore... must have been removed this from the Mudcat FAQ. We had a policy on this... let me look in the archives... Ah, there it is. WHEN MUDCAT IS DOWN: a) make a regrettable decision but not regret it b) jump your husband/wife and do it "saucy" (I know you're old, NO EXCUSE!) c) write a song AND d) let go (of all shame, anger and guilt) forever. (yes, it's really that easy) Also, I like MY women aggressive, mildly intoxicated, impulsive, and forgiving. |
