17 Oct 11 - 05:33 AM (#3240112) Subject: TECH Help Firefox From: MikeL2 Hi Can anyone help please. Recently in Firefox I have noticed that there are words in the text of web pages coloured green and underlined. If you hover the cursor above this word you get a link to another site - unwanted site -. It appears to be a fault in Firefox as it doesn't happen on IE or Google Chrome as far as I can tell. Does anyone know what causes it and more importantly how do I get rid of it?? I have only noticed it recently about the last couple of weeks or so. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers MikeL2 |
17 Oct 11 - 06:33 AM (#3240132) Subject: RE: firefox textTECH Help Firefox From: JohnInKansas This sounds like you're seeing the "glossary highlights" that some websites provide, in case the person viewing them is completely brain dead. Some sites use a lookup list that automatically highlights any terms that might not be known. On some web pages just hovering on the highlighted term will open a popup box with a "definition" or "explanation" to help you with your reading. On other sites you may need to click the highlight to get the explanation. The link can be to a local glossary, that just gives definitions, or may go to a different site for an "article about" the highlighted item. IF THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SEEING, it should be possible to turn the feature off - but it's not generally easy to find the setting. I see them on some sites in IE, but can't say if the same results happen in other browsers. A site that happens to do this a lot is MSNBC news: World News Business Tech & Science The highlights seldom show on the front pages, so you'd need to browse some of the linked articles to see if you see the same things there. With Firefox, you may have just got an update that "added the feature" or an add-on you got to do something else happens to include it. You may be describing something completely different; but I see similar stuff at lots of sites. It's mostly just annoying, but I haven't really bothered to try to turn it off in my IE. John |

I believe that what I am experiencing is different from what you describe. Even in your message here there are words in green underlined and if I hover above ,there is a little box headed "text enhance" and it says " Congratulations you may have won todays United Kingom Competition. CLICK HERE" etc etc. I haven't clicked for obvious reasons. Any ideas ?? Cheers MikeL2 |

I went to my add-ons page and there was a Facebook add-on that has "crept in". I disabled it and re=started Firefox and at first glance I don't see any green pieces of text. Looking at the link you provided it seems that there are several sources of this and different add-ons can be added from the one I had. There does't appear to be any clue as to who/what is creating the add-ons in the first place though several people blame Firefox. I will keep my eye on it now and report if any further developments occur. Cheers MikeL2 |

17 Oct 11 - 11:56 AM (#3240272) Subject: RE: firefox textTECH Help Firefox From: GUEST,Margaret Check your settings (Tools->Options->Security) to make sure you're not letting sites install addons ad libitum. The green text you're seeing, though, is just another form of advertising -- the site to which the page belongs, as part of their contract with advertisers, pass each page through a filter that does various things (turns keywords into urls, downloads some javascript and/or a stylesheet, etc) to produce the annoying effects. I try to avoid such sites, myself, because it seems that I always end up irritating myself by absent-mindedly activating one of those cursëd traps. |

I have checked the security settings and I had ticked the box that says it should warn me before adding add-ons. I too always try to avoid sites that try to do this kind of thing. I have no idea which site it came from. On this particular PC I don't use many sites and the only new one I can think of that I have used recently is is SKY go Desktop from where I watch Sky Sports sometimes. Thank you for your interes, your comments are helpful to me and I hope to others who may have similar problems. Regards Mike |
