Tech: iTunes update to 10.5 ?

For a little while now, iTunes has been asking if I want to update to version 10.5.

Unlike with previous updates, which went through in a few minutes with no trouble, when I click on this one to go ahead it looks as though it's starting from scratch with a whole new copy of iTunes. So I've come out of it without updating, as I'm worried that I'll lose the contents of my library.

Anyone got any experience of running this update?

I expect you won't lose your library contents - that's never happened with any Mac updates I've done in the past - but it's always wise to have those contents backed up on an external hard drive and/or on CDs or DVDs anyway (because there's more than one way to lose the contents of your hard drive).

I have managed to do without ITunes since I upgraded to Win7, and I hope I always will.
As a programme it's the most invasive I have ever loaded, apart from rotten, stinking, hard to get rid of, AOL.

OK, I'll give it a go, though I'm not on a Mac I'm on a PC running XP.

My iTunes library is on an external drive rather than on the PC itself, because the PC is old and little.

John M: I didn't know you can use an iPod without using iTunes?
