BS: Name of author

Hi Mudcatters, I need a bit of help to find an author's name. Last year while on holiday I read a book, historical fiction, about coalminers in W Virginia taking on their employers for better pay/conditions etc. It is not Matewan, but is centered around one central character who eventually just moves on from that scene. I would like to read more of this writers books, but can't remember who he is.
Any suggestions would help.

If you'd be so kind:

1) What period (year) did the story take place
2) When was the book written
3) Male/female author
4) What was the character's name

Any info of that sort will help in searches.

Thank you.

A subject search on ABE BOOKS brings up over 100 possibilities but one on the first screen looks promising: Battle of Blair Mountain by Robert Shogan.

Going way back, Howard Fast's 'Power' had a similar theme.
If it had been set in France it could have been Germinal - just a thought!
