24 Oct 11 - 07:17 PM (#3244196) Subject: Chord Req: Big Bill Broonzy (Single Chord Req.) From: GUEST,Jackie For example: 'When do (will) I get to be called a man' is otherwise a straight-forward blues progression in E. However, there's a chord Broonzy uses fairly often in his playing that comes after the B7 here. Skip to 1:04 to hear it exactly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBKhqvam8Yg My question is: A) What's the name of the chord? B) How is it formed on the guitar? |

Here's what I paired it down to, in order. Any of these correct?: A) E-4- B-0- G-4- D-3- A-4- E-x- B) E-0- B-0- G-4- D-3- A-4- E-x- C) E-0- B-0- G-4- D-x- A-4- E-x- D) E-4- B-0- G-4- D-x- A-4- E-x- |

24 Oct 11 - 07:55 PM (#3244222) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Big Bill Broonzy (Single Chord Req.) From: GUEST,Brad I don't think it's a straight C7 like choice 'A' would suggest. |

From: GUEST,Jackie Thanks for the reply Leadfingers, and usually I will substitute, introduce variations, etc. Trouble is, I like THAT chord voicing. Brad, I agree. To me, 'C' seems the closest. Is that a C7 chord still? |
24 Oct 11 - 08:14 PM (#3244231) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Big Bill Broonzy (Single Chord Req.) From: GUEST,Brad No idea. The f note on the d-string just sounds off in choices a and b. |

25 Oct 11 - 09:06 AM (#3244493) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Big Bill Broonzy (Single Chord Req.) From: GUEST,Johnmc I think it's B7 slid up one fret but with the second finger on str 6, dampening the fifth and omitting str 1; this is a diminished chord (G dim). Don't think it's slid two frets. |

From: The Sandman guest johnnie the notes you describe are g e bflat b, g diminshed is g bflat and d flat. there is a chord shape often used in blues, which is the b7 shape up one fret, this is c major seventh c e g b, is this the chord u mean, it is often used between c#7 an b7, so third fret b 7 shape second fret b7 shape, first fret b7. |

From: GUEST,paul hey guys, I found footage of Broonzy on a front porch, sliding to the same chord. video starts at the B7, or V chord. pay attention to the next chord. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-pShRISHnQ#t=2m22s thanks jackie for the inquiry. does this footage make it clearer for anyone to tell? -paul |
25 Oct 11 - 06:51 PM (#3244780) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Big Bill Broonzy (Single Chord Req.) From: GUEST,Jackie Thanks Paul for the video. It looks still to me like the chord is formed as such: E-0- B-0- G-4- D-x- A-4- E-x- A B7 chord slid up two frets, muting the Low E and F-note on the A-string. Per Pauls doing, I encourage newcomers (and oldcomers) to visit the link he posted to see for yourself how Bill Broonzy formed it. Then if you have a comment, let it fly. I'm still open to suggestions (mostly on how Bill forms the chord (i.e. playing it rightly), then how to name the chord in question). Again, Pauls link re-posted for ease: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-pShRISHnQ#t=2m22s |

I've tried this, but it doesn't sound right, but it could be that I'm not understanding it exactly. Is this how you suggesting to form the G dim? E-x- B-x- G-3- D-2- A-x- E-3- <----second finger here ...moved up one fret from this B7 voicing: E-2- B-0- G-2- D-1- A-2- E-x- |

27 Oct 11 - 12:24 PM (#3245608) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Big Bill Broonzy (Single Chord Req.) From: GUEST,johnmc Yes, Paul, except you lay the first finger across the fretboard to play the second string at the second fret (Db) as well. This is a common diminished "passing chord", but whether it's the Broonzy one, not able to say for sure. |
