As sung by the Pennine Folk in the 1960s.

Hey ho, roll and go,
'Round the Horn in the months of snow
How many times can a man defy,
The raging seas and the rolling sky.

Also 'Seal Hunt' - part of which is on YouTube.

Actually a tape / CD would be great if poss.

Many thanks.

Francis Chichester - NOT the first man to sail round the world single handed (That was Joshua Slocum) but a story worth a song any way !

In the 1960s the Pennine Folk sang this on a radio programme from Manchester. The chorus is:

The Ballad of the Gypsy Moth

Hey ho, roll and go,
Round the Horn in the months of snow,
How many times can a man defy
The raging seas and the rolling sky?

For years I have searched high and low for this song, but to no avail.

On another tack - does the Pennine Folk still perform. I saw one of their lps on eBay and it was over £50.

I never understood why they make such a fuss over him.

Just a Rich old fart out there doing his own thing, 'cos he could afford it. And that deserves a knighthood???

What about the millions of working class people who can't even afford a holiday let alone there own boat? The prosperity of the country is built on them. They are the ones that deserve the honours.

I think I may have an old folk mag in the loft (not as impenetrable as it sounds) along with printed tune.
Will look it out tomorrow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you.

I'm not a fan of SFC, however the song...:

1. is by the Pennine Folk - no other reason needed, however` ...
2. reminds of happy times in the folk clubs of Loughborough, Bolton and Manchester in the 1960s
3. its a rollicking good song of the sea
4. as a tall ship sailor I want to sail around Cape Horn too
5. Gypsy Moth is now used for sail training youngsters (or was)

CJB.

No need to explain, Chris. You want the song and that's good enough.

The Wikipedia article on the Gipsy Moth IV is quite interesting. The ship was built in 1962, named after the de Havilland Gipsy Moth aircraft that navigation pioneer Sir Francis Chichester (1901-1972) flew from England to Australia in the early 1930s. Chichester made his round-the-world solo sailing voyage in the Gipsy Moth IV in 274 days in 1966-67.
Note that the spelling of the ship's name is Gipsy Moth IV. Hoyt Axton wrote a song titled Gypsy Moth, about the insect....or was it? I can't really tell if the song was about the insect, the plane, the boat, or about President "Ramblin' Jack"...Kennedy.

I don't think it's on either of their LP's. Ken Cambell has been on this forum in the past. Maybe he'll seethe thread. Last time this was requested I asked Chris Swann if he had the words. He said he' d look but didn't think he had.

The Ballad of the Gypsy Moth
( Ken Campbell of The Pennine Folk)

In '66 I'll tell you Sir,
A man called Francis Chichester
Sailed out one day from a Devon cove,
To circumnavigate the globe.

Ch.: Hey ho, roll and go,
Around the Horn in the months of snow,
How many times can a man defy
The raging sea and the rolling sky?

Away from the cheers of a following crowd
Comes Gypsy Moth like a flying cloud
Around Cape Hope with a lazy motion
Straight for the heart of the Southern Ocean

Ch.:

The steering smashed and the ???
The ??? batteries are running low
They'll never make it straight they said
Here she comes around Sydney Head

Ch.:

???
With half a ton of lead in her keel
And out where the roaring 40's blow
Where the ice runs thick and big whales go

Ch.:

Around Cape Horn where the mermaid knows
Straight for the locker of Davey Jones
Where a million tons of ocean hurled
You swear you're bound for another world

Ch.:

Its off to the Gulf Stream warm and mild
With half the nation going wild
Gypsy Moth comes home from sea
So make her fast to the Greenwich Quay

Ch.:

===

But who knows the missing words please?

This has been suggested ...

A quick refit and a welcome meal,
With half a ton of lead in her keel,
And out where the roaring 40's blow,
Where the ice runs thick and big whales go ...

Thank you - that's the line!! Only been after this for 50 years!! One final search is for 'Sally Free and Easy' (by Cyril Tawney) as performed by The Pennine Folk - I have The Pennine Folk's LP 'Both Sides Now' but that track is unplayable by deep gouging!!!

congratulations!
l. well done. There are very few amendments. you have resurrecteded one of the o!d Pennine songs which I don't think we ever recorded! What a pity! there are very few changes!

or example....Last !ine of chorus for word rolling or raging I think I wrote lonely sky. In verse 2 delete letter A so that it reads... round. In verse 3 the first and second linez should
s now read The steerings smash and the progress slow the RTbatteries running !ow. And of course famous words...Youll nevermake it Fra nk they said. Verse Six. Substiute the word From instead of....for.and in line three substitute Is home for comes home....and many many for your dogged persistence to trace tne song and to get it Right.

Its a great song which I can relate to having sailed tall ships for a number of years - including in a couple of force 8 gales (in the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay). It is also great to have the composer Ken Campbell make the final adjustments - thank you.

The only recording out there is a rather muffled 'My Kind Of Folk' from 12-03-1969. Here:

A propos of very little ...
Gypsy Moth was built by Tyrells of Arklow. Her keel was cast In the Tonge and Taggart iron foundry in Dublin.
