Have a great birthday Hank, without whom none of this would have been possible or even necessary"

I think this is the first time I have agreed with Bonzo3legs on anything. Happy Birthday to a fine man and great entertainer.

I've never liked The Shadows all that much but that doesn't prevent me from owning up about their influence and ability.
Happy Birthday Hank B.

Happy birthday, Hank, from one of the thousands (tens of thousands?) who bought a cheap, imitation, red Strat in the early 60's.

I had a Futurama II, which was a bad guitar with very low output and useless tremolo arm. I then bought a Burns Sonic which I sold and used a Bo Diddley style diy guitar. I finally bought a Strat in 1977!

A very happy birthday to one of my all-time guitar heroes. Never owned a red Strat, but did eventually manage to scrape together enough pennies for a blond Tele...practised the'Shadows Walk' for hours...harder than it looks to 'walk' & play simultaneously!

You can blame Hank for me taking up the guitar, too!!

Happy 70th!

I'd have loved a Futurama - I had a red Egmond Airstream II, horrible in every way, before I worked up to a Burns Sonic, and eventually (1986) got a Strat with the compo from a motorbike accident. Now a Tele comforts me in my old age.

First there was my mother's tennis racquet, which I damaged beyond repair. (Not forgetting the wardrobe mirror).

Then can the Colorama with something like a toilet-flushing lever which acted as the tremelo arm. And much later the Strat.

Thansk for the inspiration Hank. Don't stop playing.

Happy birthday - I still play Apache and others and was asked recently by a youngster "Is that Mozart or something" and then added "Wasn't his first name Hank?" Work out my reply

Happy birthday to probably my first guitar inspiration (though I've never played a solid body guitar in my life).

I never "got" The Shadows. For a start, their daft little dance steps were just plain irritating.
No, I was a fan of harder rock, and, of course, their influence all but disappeared with the arrival of The Beatles, and the young blues guitarists Eric, Jeff etc.
However, it has to be said, that many, guitarists loved them, and not least of all the wonderful Mark Knofpler

But where was the 'harder rock' for British kids in 1958/9? Especially those of us living out in the country in the days of two-channel TV. As I recall it, until we discovered Radio Luxembourg, the Shads were as gritty and cutting-edge as it got.

Lest we forget, Bruce Welch will be 70 on November 2nd. Although I'm not a fan of The Shads I must say his rhythm playing is always impressive. So, Happy Birthday Bruce.
With reference to 'harder rock'; there was still plenty of Little Richard et al available. Maybe this is what Guest Tunesmith is referring to.

Well, it was to come in the shape of Johnny Kidd & the Pirates and Screaming Lord Sutch & the Savages within a year or two!!

The shadows were on TOTP2 last night when I awoke with a start on the sofa! It was that bloody Marvin bloke that woke me up!

Happy birthday anyway. Get yourself some new glasses :-)

Happy Birthday Hank... the man who led many of us to taking up the guitar all those years ago. I still can't believe how you played all those tunes without ever looking at the fretboard!!!

I know you do not celebrate birthdays as such for your religious beliefs but still I wish you every good thing and thank you for your contribution to my personal musical journey. Warmest regards from Ian and the Adelaide Shadows club

Happy 70th Birthday Hank Marvin. As with Jimmy Saville I was very young when the Shadows were first around many a cinema trip was heightened by Apache or Wonderful Land played in the intervals but in my teens my intersts drifted to the Beatles and then Rock and Ska so a million miles away from the Shadows. But now I realise how much that music meant to me growing up and has become my guilty pleasure.

Good Grief! Punkfolkrocker. I do believe I saw that show at the Ritz Cinema, Cleethorpes. A workmate got tickets withiut havuibng to queue up so I thought "Why not". The rest of the bill was rather 'square' but, as I mentioned above, there was no lack of ability. Shortly afterwards I found "Do You Want To Dance" by Bobby Freeman on a 78 rpm. So Cliff and The Shads, thanks for that. Their early 45s such as "Please Don't Tease" were great IMO.
