31 Oct 11 - 05:42 PM (#3247918) Subject: BS: Invest in Canadian gold From: Q (Frank Staplin) The Royal Canadian Mint is offering a gold investment product- ETR's (Exchange Traded Receipts) to be traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The offer is being made in Canada only, although the receipts will be priced in both Canadian and U.S. dollars. Unlike other gold investments, the purchasers will actually physically own gold, redeemable in 99.99 percent pure gold coins or bars. The gold is physically held by the Mint. The initial offering of ETR's is at $20 CAD each; the initial offer is $250 million CAD. The date of the offering has not yet been set. Purchase is through a syndicate of investment dealers, including several Canadian banks. Please contact them if interested; those first on the lists will of cource receive preference. The craze for gold worldwide may go on for a while longer, but the current high prices may not hold. |

Here in Calgary, and western Canada for that matter, real estate continues to do well. A small downturn in 2008-2009, but upward trend continues and building and housing construction is strong. Gnu, I cuss too about low GIC and other bank interest, which will continue to be low for some time. But at least we have a little reserve in our pockets. My house was a good investment, as noted above. Purchased for $30,000 in 1960, offers now at around $750,000. Luckily, Canadian banks were restrained by the government, and loans were not handed out to those with iffy prospects. Most of the pain suffered in the U.S. was avoided. |

So, a 30K investment in 1960 (compunced) at that long term rate would give a person almost a million in 2010. As to primary residences, one would also have to figure in improvements/maintainance, mortages, no income tax and residing there in to the mix. The lucky folks are likely those in Vancouver, and sections of Toronto, who saw extreme increases in roperty values over a short number of years. |

We bought our first house in 1982, when the mortgage rates were similar, for 65K and turned it over four years later for 131K allowing us to purchase our second house mortgage free. |

I never bought in because I knew I would take a tax bath in my retirement. Glad I held off. Well, I did buy some. I was gonna start a business so I bought in and then took out $4999 at a time... no tax up front. But, I never bought any for retirement. Just for cash flow. |
