Too bad they have to do their routines in "the enemy's language." But that's the lingua franca of this comedy venue.

The sound is awful, but for a really sharp critic, you can't go wrong with Sherman Alexie and Stephen Colbert. :)

"Let's bomb them with singer-songwriters." More Sherman.

I usually don't like most standup comedy much...regardless of what culture is doing it...but I like the 3rd guy's deadpan sense of humour. ;-)

Very good - Only saw a bit as I'm off now but what I saw was very funny and I'll watch the rest later. THAT I find far better and more effective than any amount of emo film or empassioned rantings! I always thought humour had a far better edge than most other media.

I have nothing to say to you.

I am glad the others on this thread enjoyed these guys. They too, are part of the Great Healing that is now starting to happen, made far better with President Obama's statment yesterday, proclaiming November 2011 to be National Native American Heritage Month. The 25th of November is to be National Native American Heritage Day, where he asks the country to celebrate the culture of the American Indians and Alaskan Natives, and to recognise the deep talent which lies within their culture, from which ALL of America has benefitted so much.

Yupik approach to the Hallelujah Chorus - a different kind of humor!

Jon Stewart for really good and hysterically funny, sometimes, news coverage. It's his headlines I adore:

Mess O'Potamia for the Middle East conflict...
No'Amor Quadaffi when Quadaffi, as appropriate...
Palestein for a Rapprochement between Jews and Arabs...

I assume the post Lizzie was referring to had been purged, no doubt for good reason. It's always a good idea, when responding to a post, to give some indication of the post to which we are responding...

Yes - Very witty indeed. I can see a lot of the great Jackie Mason in some of the performances. I lved the comment about making enough money to buy the land back - Off the Japanese:-)

They shouldn't be Christianised though, should they?
It makes me feel sad...
It's not their culture.

That is indeed a classic SRS - Love it :-)

Who's been chritianised though? What am I missing?

Lots of people enjoy christian music without being christians I guess. I enjoy the odd verse of Sympathy for the Devil - But I ain't no satanist! (Although I suspect some people think differently :-) )

I think she speaks of the Yup'ic video. And that discussion is fraught with contention so best leave it be and just enjoy the humour and the joy that is intended.

Well, gnu, I did think the same but I couldn't quite figure out the connection of a load of people obviously enjoying themselves while holding up the words of the Hallelujah Chorus had to do with being 'christianised'. Still, I suppose if we go into these threads expecting very little to make sense, we will never be dissappointed:-) As to anything being fraught with contention - When has that ever stopped a mudcatter? :-)

Often when American Indian or other indigenous people absorb christianity they give it their own spin. I remember reading a Cherokee author's statement that they looked at the various religions each as different forms of power and had no problems in adopting more than one because it would give them more power in the spirit world. That certainly bugs the hell out of the christian ones who want to supplant the old religions. But you're right, they shouldn't have to accept it. One can probably presume that the one white face in the flick was the youth pastor who organized the whole thing.

Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, many other contemporary authors will give you an interesting look at what religion means in their communities. I offered up the video as a simple way to see that these kids were having a lot of fun performing with cards for that music video. For them, it was humor, at the very least.
