Happy performers

I thought it would be fun to mention performers who make people happy. Better than that, performers who are happy! Sara Grey always make me feel happy - she smiles and she immerses herself in her performances. A lovely person too. So Sara goes to the top of my list. Who would you have on your list?

I saw Freeland Barbour last night. He has a great relaxed manner on stage - no artifical jokes, he just comes across as friendly and funny.

You beat me to it, Elmore.

Riders in the Sky, especially Ranger Doug. He's not only happy on stage, he seems peaceful and full of goodwill.

I wnt to see Janis Ian last week. There are moments of sadness in her performance but, mostly the lady was wry and occasionally downright gigglemaking.

For me it has to be Chris Sherburn and Denny Bartley but interestingly a performer someone has already mentioned makes me want to end it all. Proving some of the people some of the time etc

Alistair McDonald - so bubbling with enthusiasm!
Maireread Green - a shining example to many soor-faced intrumentalists: she smiles through everything!
Colum Sands - could make his living in stand-up comedy/story-telling if he never sang at all (but it would be a pity to miss his great songs).

I couldn't care less if a performer smiles. Something wrong with me, I suppose.

Well, there's a lot of performers here I've never heard of, but would certainly like to hear. American, perhaps? The Wilsons and the Young Uns, both from my neck of the woods. Yes in bucketfuls to both. A nice, happy thread!

Happy Traum. ;-)

Seriously, though, I finally got to see him (and meet him) in NYC quite recently and he was just amazing.

In no particular order: Vin Garbutt. Pete Seeger. Kerr & Fagan. G Papavgeris. Christine Lavin. John McCutcheon. Cloudstreet. The Berrymans. Spiers and Boden. Keith Donnelly. Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. Finest Kind.

That's just for starters...

Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher always seem to me to be having a ball, leastways one of them does while the other is comically grumpy.

I haven't seen the Wrigley Sisters in years, but my memory of them is one of their very evident joy in playing, most infectious.

I think that The Claque are very funny in an intelligent and self-deprecating way.

I think you have to distinguish those who do comedy material who you would expect, naturally, to be happy, and those who do serious stuff, yet can still exude humour. Vin Garbutt has always struck me as someone who can do very serious material, yet the "bits in between" are always hilarious.
