Brent Hall (CT)--Injured 10-29-11(Sounding Board)

I am very sorry to share this bad news. Brent was doing sound for the Folk Legacy 50th Anniversary Sounding Board concert in West Hartford, CT, the night of the freak Nor'easter. While he was cleaning off his car, after the concert, a tree fell on him, causing a skull fracture & multiple fractured ribs. He was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital, 114 Woodland Street, Hartford, CT 06105 & is expected to recover fully, but it may be a long, painful road. I don't believe he can have visitors at this time; he needs to rest as much as possible. We were horrified to receive this news.

best,

Barbara

Brent is the president and treasurer of The Sounding Board Coffeehouse, so his injury caused the board the cancel the rest of the concert season. I heard this from Janet Steucek, another director, regarding his condition yesterday:

he is better - friends went to see him today. He is responding well to questions but is very tired. 2 surgeries so far to relieve pressure..

Brent has had a tough year and we hope he recovers fully and quickily.

Thanks Barbara for posting this. The 1st surgery was to remove bone chips and the 2nd surgery was to repair a vein that had broken. He is doing well, considering what has happened to him. He does suffer from blurred vision at this time. We should know more (hopefully) by this weekend. It will be ANOTHER long road to recovery. In the meantime, the Sounding Board will be on their regular schedule starting in January 2012, but will probably not have concerts every week.

What a terrible tragedy, especially coming in what was supposed to be a time of celebration. After so many losses for Folk Legacy in the last few years, it's just too much.

Here's healing thoughts and good energy sent up your way and to Brent.

Thank you for sharing your church space, Rev. Sarah. Hope you didn't suffer any more property damage than those 2 downed trees.

One thing is, when he's fully recovered, which I trust will be the case before too long, any time he tells people about how "a tree fell on me while I was cleaning my car" it's liable to sound like he's telling them a joke...

A bit like the Graham Greene story about a boy whose father was killed by a pig falling on him from a balcony in Naples.

and continued success for Folk Legacy and the venue where the concerts are held the West Hartford Universalist Church

This update on Brent comes by way of his brother at noon today:

He has been moved out of the ICU and has some sharper vision returning in one eye so far. He will be moving to a rehab facility that specializes in head injuries in the next week or two. The facility has a great reputation and is only two miles from his home making it easier for his brother to visit frequently.

We join the rest of you in wishing Brent a speedy and complete recovery.

So glad to get this update, Branford! I'm glad there's progress toward recovery. Having been at the concert & in the parking lot, ourselves, at that time, we have just been horrified to think of Brent's injuries. I'll let Caroline know.

best,

Barbara

Thanks to all who stayed with him and got medical attention for him on the night of his injury and to those providing updates on Mudcat.

Just heard about this today in an e-mail from Jan. I was horrified and saddened. Brent is a great guy and a superb sound man and has been doing sound for the Sounding Board for many years. Glad he is at Gaylord. That is a great place. Hope to get down there to see him soon.

Frank and I played some bluegrass for Brent at Gaylord hospital today. He was confined to bed, in good spirits but subdued and said he had vision problems, although that was getting slightly better. It was good to be able to share some music with him, knowing how much music means to him. Another patient also came in while we were playing and said at the end of the hour that this music made his day. That made our day.

Music and friends can only help.

Barbara,

Thanks for sharing the music with Brent & for sharing the news with us. I still can hardly believe it happened. When we set off for the concert, we didn't expect it to be life-threatening. I am so sad this happened to Brent.
