Imagine you could create your own "composite" folk artist by taking particular talents from your favourite performers and merging them in to one Super, SUPER artist.
Here's my choice

The voice of Archie Fisher
+The guitar of Nic Jones
+The songwriting skills of Stan Rogers
+The personality of Vin Garbutt.

Voice - there's a case to be made for Ian Bruce. I think the vehemence of his delivery ousts the sometimes over-controlled June Tabor. Some revival period female singers were in very good voice then: Baez, Collins, Odetta.
Guitar - difficult. Probably Martin Carthy but there's a case to be made for Martin Simpson too. Nic Jones's timing is too counter-intuitive for me to nominate him.
Songwriting? - er, I thought this was about folk singers. If you mean research skills - hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Maybe Bert Lloyd (yes I have seen him live when he was).
Personality? Hmm. Presumably onstage personality. I think Jon Loomes just edges Martin Carthy out but there is a case to be made for a Phatt B'Stard (not the one who wanted to hide my drumsticks). Or, indeed, Johnny Silvo. I was very taken with June Tabor's stage presentation, too, when for the first time I saw her live last week.

How about
Vocals - Jacqui McShee
Guitar - John Renbourn
Songwriting (where needed) - Bert Jansch (he would be allowed to participate on guitar as well)
On second thought, that lineup would never work, would it.
-Glenn

PS Personality - me!

Methinks Highlandman could have gone a wee bit further and said the bass of Danny Thompson. Mind you, there is a case of agreeing, I loved the folk baroque style of Pentangle.

Ok.. let's see;

Vocals - Maddy Prior
Guitar - Dick Gaughan
Songwriting - Bernie Parry
Personality - Bernard Wrigley if I want cheering up, Vin Garbutt if I need reminding that some people really care.

Ah, caught out, Ian M.
Sorry, I happen to be on a Pentangle binge these days.
Truth is, there are very few listed upthread that I wouldn't agree with! Too hard to choose.

Odd that Howling Eddie Cranshaw has not been given honourable mention. ;-)

That's Howlin' Eddie Cranshaw, LH. Sorry to be so pedantic, but in the interest of historical accuracy, let's try to get it right.
