Would like to find the lyrics to Lily May Ledford's version of Shornin' Bread she sang with the Coon Creek Girls. Have to audio version, but can't make out all the words. Wonder if John Lair wrote the lyrics for the Coon Creek Girls. He re-wrote some some songs to fit their style. Thanks- AR

The title Lily May Ledford used for the song with the Coon Creek Girls was Shortenin' Bread--note spelling. That may help with a search if no one has the lyrics to hand.

AR, I gotta hit the sack, but if no one answers this by tomorrow when I roust my bones out of bed, I'll have a try at locating the lyrics for you.

Thanks Guest 999. That new spelling just might do the trick.

I finally made out most of the words, and what I couldn't understand I wrote new words. After all, isn't that the "folk process"?

Yes it is.

Guest: please post your lyrics. And please identify which parts you wrote.

You can hear the Coon Creek Girls sing it there.

That is from the Digital Library of Appalachia

Here's a start:

Shortenin' Bread (from Lily May Ledford)

Well now, Old Mother Hubbard now, talking to me
Getting mighty old, mighty hard to see
Her old dog turned his head
Won't have nothing but shortenin' bread.

Chorus: I like the shortening bread
            You like the shortening bread
            They like the shortening bread
            Everybody like the shortenin' bread.

Well… Sheeps in the meadow, cows in the corn
Where in the world has the little boy gone
Out in the kitchen his hat on his head
Getting him stuffed? with shortenin' bread.

Well...Poor old

Worked all summer
