09 Nov 11 - 10:09 AM (#3253536) Subject: 'Cpme west along the Road' Irish TV From: MartinRyan "Come West along the Road" is a long-running series on Irish Television (RTE) which shows extracts from their archive of Irish traditional music, song and dance. It is produced and presented by Nicholas Carolan, director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA). A new series has just started and programmes are available online, worldwide for two weeks after broadcast. Highly recommended. Click here. Regards p.s. They make you sit through a few ads first, I'm afraid! |

12 Nov 11 - 09:10 AM (#3255510) Subject: RE: 'Come west along the Road' Irish TV From: Bonnie Shaljean Watched this last night, and it was excellent as usual (there was even a quick shot of Packie in one of the scenes tho he wasn't playing) but: WHERE WAS NICHOLAS? All the link-ins & intros were subtitled and no genial presenter did we see or hear anywhere. Martin... any idea? |
12 Nov 11 - 09:35 AM (#3255520) Subject: RE: 'Come west along the Road' Irish TV From: GUEST,Peter Laban Nicholas Carolan did a general introduction at the start of the programme, which was enough really wasn't it? It was a good opening for the new series. Neilidh Mulligan was in great form. Enjoyed that. And the rest of it too. |
12 Nov 11 - 10:23 AM (#3255552) Subject: RE: 'Come west along the Road' Irish TV From: Bonnie Shaljean > which was enough really wasn't it? No, not for me. I like the way it has been presented in the past, with Nicholas introducing each scene. I don't think subtitles are enough, particularly when he's such a good host. And I'm no wiser as to why it's changed...? Fun to see a youthful Gavin with his curly locks - |
12 Nov 11 - 10:51 AM (#3255568) Subject: RE: 'Come west along the Road' Irish TV From: Thomas Stern In the USA, KULTUR has issued 2 DVD's from the series. In the UK, RTE has 3 DVD's. Best wishes, Thomas. |
12 Nov 11 - 11:46 AM (#3255584) Subject: RE: 'Come west along the Road' Irish TV From: GUEST,Peter Laban Bonnie, I think Nicholas has good information but he is a bit wooden as a presenter. That said, he did introduce all items in the previous programme of this series so maybe this time he didn't because all items were taken from the same run of 'Long Note' programmes and there was little left to introduce. |
12 Nov 11 - 12:52 PM (#3255640) Subject: RE: 'Come west along the Road' Irish TV From: MartinRyan Yeah - sometimes he introduces individual items, other times he lines up a single old programme or a group from a particular series. His great advantage is that he knows whereof he speaks. With his gentle delivery, of course, he's no Jimmy Saville! Regards |
