I mean, "as good as" is a bit of a blind alley. But I can think of interesting younger singers who are doing individual, quality stuff with Scottish trad song (eg Alasdair Roberts, Ewan McLennan)... And I can think of interesting younger singers who are doing individual, quality stuff with English trad song (Cath & Phil Tyler, Mary Hampton, Michael Rossiter, James Raynard [admittedly he seems to have gone quiet after his 1 album], Unthanks, Trembling Bells and others]) Are there equivalents in Ireland? I've heard one or two very impressive instrumentalists of late (I recommended a fiddler on here very recently). But what about songs? Anything a bit quirky/different in Irish folk? |
