Most of the other songs from the traditional Catholic Mass for the Dead are inspiring, healing, and hopeful - but often they were sung like dirges. Their lyrics said things like "May the angels lead you into Paradise," "let perpetual light shine upon them," "grant them rest/grant them eternal rest." Too bad the singers made them into such mournful songs instead of words of hope. -Joe- |

It's from the Southern Harmony which along with Sacred Harp seems to have a higher percentage of mournful tunes than are in the mainstream protestant hymnals. |

I've yawned through it many a time. Have never heard "Going down the Valley" before, and have to admit I like it very much! Very simple and open to harmonies for all voices. I can imagine an African choir singing it. |

13 Nov 11 - 07:43 PM (#3256482) Subject: RE: Mournful Hymns From: Haruo The Old Regular Baptists, I believe, sing "Hail ye sighing sons of sorrow" to an extremely slow Holy Manna (not the tune used in Southern Harmony), and they also have additional verses including one rather laughably sorrowful one about "expiring insects' cries" (but of course insects, in such churches, are a type of the sinful human being; "for such a worm as I", you know...)
