Mournful Hymns

Just uploaded our version of "We Are Going Down the Valley" and wondered how many other hymns might fit into the "mournful" category?

The hymns from my (thankfully long past) childhood were almost uniformly mournful or boring. There were exceptions, but that just highlighted the provailing desolation.

The Catholic funeral sequence, Dies Irae (That Day of Wrath) is the epitome of a truly mournful dirge. Most of the other songs from the traditional Catholic Mass for the Dead are inspiring, healing, and hopeful - but often they were sung like dirges. Their lyrics said things like "May the angels lead you into Paradise," "let perpetual light shine upon them," "grant them rest/grant them eternal rest." Too bad the singers made them into such mournful songs instead of words of hope.

O sacred head now wounded

Once a year we really contemplated man's inhumanity to man.

I hadn't heard of "Hail Ye Sighing Sons of Sorrow" before. It certainly fits the category. It's from the Southern Harmony which along with Sacred Harp seems to have a higher percentage of mournful tunes than are in the mainstream protestant hymnals.

mourning is certainly part of christian experience so i guess such hymns have their place, but so is joy since we serve a risen saviour

Agreed, Pete, I think there are probably more songs of joy than of mourning. Psalm 30:5 "Weeping may endure for the night, but joy cometh in the morning."   Could even be that joy comes in the mourning!

"The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ our lord..."
It always seems to get slower and slower as you sing it. I've yawned through it many a time.
Have never heard "Going down the Valley" before, and have to admit I like it very much! Very simple and open to harmonies for all voices. I can imagine an African choir singing it.

The Old Regular Baptists, I believe, sing "Hail ye sighing sons of sorrow" to an extremely slow Holy Manna (not the tune used in Southern Harmony), and they also have additional verses including one rather laughably sorrowful one about "expiring insects' cries" (but of course insects, in such churches, are a type of the sinful human being; "for such a worm as I", you know...)
