23 Nov 11 - 09:24 AM (#3262044) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: jacqui.c There are people around who think that giving a copy of their own CD automatically entitles them to receive a copy of a CD from a performer - seen it happen more than once. Difference is, some people are trying to make a living, at least partially, out of the music and selling their CDs comes into the equation. Whilst they might, for politeness sake, and to avoid upsetting another would be performer, take a proffered CD I can see no reason why they should have to give away one of their own. Gifts should be given without expecting something in return. |
23 Nov 11 - 09:40 AM (#3262050) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Acorn4 I was once asked if I had a CD and would be willing to swap - I said OK although I wasn't mad keen on the one on offer. After we'd swapped, the bloke sai:- "Actually, mine's £20." Must have seen me coming! |
23 Nov 11 - 10:35 AM (#3262074) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: DebC Right on, Jacqui. I never know how to react to this one. I am offered CDs all the time and I feel it's rude to refuse. Consequently, I have A LOT of CDs that I really don't care for and they are cluttering up my storage space. I had an incident happen a couple of weeks ago at a conference where a person offered me their CD. I looked at it and said to them "Thank you, but you already gave me a copy of this a few years ago" The only way I knew that was I found the CD in a pile of unwanted discs. The person then said, "Did you bring any of your CDs with you?" This was an obvious hint that they wanted a free copy. I replied "I did bring some with me, but I am only giving them to DJs and concert presenters who ask. If you would like one, they are $15 for purchase" I didn't feel bad about this at all. This person was clueless. I have been thinking of taking all the unwanted CDs we have (and between hubby and meself there are hundreds) and offering them up as "Grab Bags" for a certain amount of money and donating the proceeds to our local food bank. 23 Nov 11 - 12:51 PM (#3262143) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Richard Bridge A good use of unwanted CD gifts is to put them in the raffle at folk clubs! I was once discussing rock and roll (you remember, sort of 50s or early 60s popular music) in a pub with my daughter and her boyfriend - comparing it to modern re-creations (as distinct from re-interpretaton) of that period's music - and I called it "necrophiliac" rock and roll. A nosy bugger next to us said "What's "necrophiliac" - so I told him that it was someone who fucked dead people. He looked at me as if I should not have said that in front of my daughter. |

23 Nov 11 - 01:00 PM (#3262153) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: kendall It's just bad form to expect to swap CDs with anyone. If they want one of yours, they will ask for it. I've known Tom Paxton for 30 years but I would never suggest swapping cds with him. Selling them is how he makes his living for Pete's sake! |

23 Nov 11 - 06:06 PM (#3262341) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Anne Lister That moment when someone suggests we swap albums is the moment I hate the most ... although someone asking me to give them an honest critique of their songs comes close, I suppose. 23 Nov 11 - 06:28 PM (#3262354) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: treewind Bideford Folk Club has a great scheme where from time to time everybody brings a few CDs they don't want and they get put on a table, and anyone can take anything they like for free. Apparently many come away from this absolutely delighted with stuff they've found there, even though the source of their pleasure was something another club member never wanted to see again. Duton Hill Folk Club has a box for unwanted CDs which are dropped in for nothing and sold for £1 to help raise funds for the club. That scheme is going quite well too. We've done a couple of CD swaps, but I don't think it happens so much in the UK. |

24 Nov 11 - 02:32 PM (#3262812) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Mysha Hi, Oh, I don't know. It would seem to me, you can always offer your CD to someone if you're honest about you wanting them to have it. It's just that there should be no strings attached. If you find it in their garage sale (US) / the folk club raffle (UK) next, that should be their business, not yours. Asking for more than that would seem a recipe for "discussions" to me. Yes, Chris, we know. It's in the telling. But it was a nice thread starter. Bye, Mysha |
25 Nov 11 - 03:12 AM (#3263117) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: Hamish Um... should I switch off my cookie before posting this? Probably, but never mind, eh? Like DebC and others I have any number of "obligation" CDs. Some gifts, some I have found it awkward to not buy. Heck, I've even bought too many CDs at the end of gigs by established acts that I've really enjoyed...and the CD is deemed surplus to requirements long before the end of its first play. I suppose bird scarers is another option, but I like DebC's grab bag idea. You'd have to be careful whose CDs were in each bag and where you were off-loading them tho'!! On the other hand, sometimes there's a gem - or a rough diamond - waiting to be discovered. |
25 Nov 11 - 11:37 AM (#3263336) Subject: RE: Overheard in a local folk club From: GUEST,Jonny Sunshine Someone once came up to me straight after a song while on stage at a festival and loudly asked how much my CDs were, followed up by, can I swap for one of mine. The most tactful thing I could think of was to say yes, figuring that the actual cost of the CD wasn't worth worrying over it. I bumped into him the following year, he told me how much he'd enjoyed the album. Which is way, way more than I could say in return.... |
