BS: Looking for Information on the Following

Found this years ago and wonder if anyone has ever seen this before. It is about one inch long. Obviously it has something to do with seamen but if anyone knows any history on it, it sure would be appreciated.

That is strange, it works at this end.
Any suggestions out there?

I see several pictures, but none of them has today's date on it.

the link works if you copy it and remove the # at the end. I still have no idea what the item is.

ALWAYS be careful of links which end in a symbol like that.

Couldnt get it to load but after visiting Jim's link i went back and tried to highlight Adrians link to copy and paste but must have hit it and the picture popped up.

Ok so it is about an inch a fouled anchor with a coil of rope above it could it be a brooch or badge?

Above the anchor a chain and it is worn around the neck. it is not a broach or badge. it is meant to be worn around the neck. Thanks Bill for that information ( # ) Does the last try I made work? Works fine here.

The anchor has been used as a Christian symbol, so it's not unusual to see it do duty as a crucifix. The fouled anchor when used in a tattoo, signified that the wearer has crossed the Atlantic.
Items like this are still available to buy, here is an image of one.

I have also seen similar pieces as a brooch or watch fob or on a key chain.

Certainly looks like a watch fob to me.

What do you mean by 'fouled'?

It has a rope twisted round it. If you get an anchor entangled in it's rope or other debris, it is described as 'fouled'
An anchorage wher the bottom is covered in snags and anchoring is difficult, is described as 'foul ground'

Might be worth trying that out with Google Images. I think there's a search thing there that will do its best to find other pictures/configurations that are the same or similar.

It bears a crucifix; it is a Mariner's Cross. John MacKenzie is right. Not an award, but some religious mariners wear them.

The link worked for me (IE), and the image is enlarged when clicked on.

Google provides explanation and a bit of history on the Mariner's Cross.

Thanks all for the valuable information. Q, if I had known it was called a "Mariner's Cross" I would have googled it. Thanks again.
