25 Nov 11 - 11:01 AM (#3263315) Subject: Tech: Garageband Anyone From: Den I recently purchased an iPad 2 and I have to tell you its the most fun toy I think I've ever owned, but back to the topic of the thread. I bought Garageband for the iPad and am completely Gobsmacked by its potential to create great musical ideas quickly. I flew across the country (Canada) last weekend which took most of the day and its usually pretty boring. Sitting in airports, sitting on planes. Not any more, Garageband kept me entertained for hours and I ended up writing a piece of music that really pleased me. When I got home I uploaded the piece to my iMac, added real instruments and now have a piece that I am very proud of. Garageband certainly does give you the ability to create some very decent quality demos. CD quality if you put the time into it. |

Oddly enough, I don't now use it for its loops because, great though they are at first, I eventually found many of them tedious. What I do use it for is as a final mixer for multiple tracking I've done on my 8-track digital Roland. When I've recorded all the tracks I want, I upload each one separately as a track in Garageband and then use Garageband to control track variations in EQ, volume, pan, etc. Audacity is great, but you can't (as far as I know) vary track volume, EQ or pan at several points within each track - which Garageband handles very well. |

I use the smart instruments on the iPad. I did however purchase EZ Drummer which is amazing and Guitar Rig. The programme (Garageband) is very intuitive and quite comprehensive. I have Logic too. |

When I first got it, bundled on my computer so didn't have to pay separately for it, I found it was just as good as the Cakewalk I had been using and in some ways even better. The latest version that came with my new Mac is even more so. So, I got the iPad and more recently iPhone versions. Well chuffed. |

I have an Akai DPS12i (given to me by a client's widow out of his estate as a thank-you gift) that I have so far been too fazed by the thought of the digital menus to try out. I think you may have unlocked me! |
