I remember seeing him on the top UK TV variety show "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" ( 1958?) And in those days, with only two UK Tv channels, everyone in the country used to watch that show. At the time I thought he was great, and defininitely differnent than anything that we'd seen before. |

From: wilbyhillbilly Whole Lotta Woman was one of the most played records on the jukebox in our little local "coffee bar" where we lived on a "plate of chips and a coke" when I was just a teenager. It was all new then, this American rock'n'roll revolution, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Everly Bros, etc, etc. Ahh, wonderful memories of a first love and an era that was in some ways so much more innocent than today. But then, I suppose all old fogies like me say similar, just glad I can still remember:-). |

Saw a fairly extended article on him a few years ago. I guess I had assumed that his name was from Indian heritage, and I think he played that up just a little, but the article said no Indian lineage. Rainwater said then that he took a beating from bootlegged recordings that he saw no proceeds from. An oddball memory that stuck: I have no idea which TV show, but I remember him singing "Mister Blues, Mister Blues, why don't you go f... my baby, Mister Blues". I could never quite make out the "f" word. It really must have been "find" or something. I doubt that he would have tried to get away with what it kept sounding like, and there surely would have been some uproar if he had sprung "the f word" on them. |

You're also aware that Gene Vincent was tried in absentia, I believe, I Virginny--his home state--because in "Woman Love" he supposedly says the verse, "I'm lookin' for a woman with a one-track mind a-huggin' and a-squeezing' and a-smoochin' all the time" actually contained the f-word. He seems to deliberately work a pseudo-"F" sound just before he sings "huggin'" so that it sounds like "a-fuggin'". Give it a listen. So Marvin tried the same thing. A little racy publicity never hurts. |
