It just occurred to me that Marvin Rainwater lived in the neighborhood I grew up in...

Anyone ever heard of him???

Seems he had a following...

According to his website, he's still around, up in Minnesota. According to wiki, he's 86! My Rog remembers him and i recognise some of his songs. Like this one esp.: click here. Did you ever see/meet him?

For a short time he was big! I remember seeing him on the top UK TV variety show "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" ( 1958?)
And in those days, with only two UK Tv channels, everyone in the country used to watch that show.
At the time I thought he was great, and defininitely differnent than anything that we'd seen before.

Whole Lotta Woman was one of the most played records on the jukebox in our little local "coffee bar" where we lived on a "plate of chips and a coke" when I was just a teenager.

It was all new then, this American rock'n'roll revolution, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Everly Bros, etc, etc.

Ahh, wonderful memories of a first love and an era that was in some ways so much more innocent than today.

But then, I suppose all old fogies like me say similar, just glad I can still remember:-).

I used to play MV's "Whole Lotta Woman" in a rock'n roll band - always got the punters jumping and jiving.

No, I never met him but I vividly remember exactly which house he lived in which, BTW, was as a ver modest house like everyone else lived in...

I remember his hayday on country music radio & TV. Saw a fairly extended article on him a few years ago. I guess I had assumed that his name was from Indian heritage, and I think he played that up just a little, but the article said no Indian lineage. Rainwater said then that he took a beating from bootlegged recordings that he saw no proceeds from.

An oddball memory that stuck: I have no idea which TV show, but I remember him singing "Mister Blues, Mister Blues, why don't you go f... my baby, Mister Blues". I could never quite make out the "f" word. It really must have been "find" or something. I doubt that he would have tried to get away with what it kept sounding like, and there surely would have been some uproar if he had sprung "the f word" on them.

Just checked YouTube, and there are a few things including This, which is what I remember him best for. I would say it still sounds pretty good.

I had 'Whole Lotta Woman' on a bright yellow labelled MGM 78. Mr. Rainwater played in various clubs in County Durham (UK) in the 80s and apparently developed a taste for 'Newkie Brown'

frogprince, check my link up above...great minds, great tastes.*bg*

And, in this link is sure doesn't sound like "find" my baby. I think he slipped one by them! It might be "bug?"

He was regularly played on Radio Luxemburg, which was the only decent music station reaching (most of) the UK in those dim, distant days. Never made the charts here.

Marvin's recording of "Whole Lotta Woman" was No 1 in the UK charts for three weeks in 1958!

I still have, at least I never sold it, Whole Lotta Woman on 45 rpm on the yellow MGM label. I think the B side was I dig you baby, another good song. I was one of those records that annoyed my parents because I played it over and over again!

I remember him best for "Gonna Find Me a Bluebird" and "Gotta Go Get My Baby". Seems like there was a hic-up in 'ba----by'. I read somewhere that he did have Cherokee ancestry, but it is not all that unusual for a person to make up things to create a public personae.

Well, seems that Marvin Rainwater had him a littl34e band that played in Washington, D.C. and his lead guitar player was a youngin' named "Roy Clark"...

BTW, the house he lived back then in was in Falls Church, Va.

I have a vinyl record of him. It has Mr. Blues on it. He says, "Why don't you go bug my baby, Mr. Blues, Mr. Blues" not fuck my baby.

Never cared much for his rockabilly phase. He was a pretty fair country singer for a while. I still remember his "Indian Burial Ground." Cherokee country singers weren't common, and he really pushed it.

He probably deliberately obscured "bug" to sound like fuck because I admit I thought he said fuck at first as well. You're also aware that Gene Vincent was tried in absentia, I believe, I Virginny--his home state--because in "Woman Love" he supposedly says the verse, "I'm lookin' for a woman with a one-track mind a-huggin' and a-squeezing' and a-smoochin' all the time" actually contained the f-word. He seems to deliberately work a pseudo-"F" sound just before he sings "huggin'" so that it sounds like "a-fuggin'". Give it a listen. So Marvin tried the same thing. A little racy publicity never hurts.

Remember Buddy Knox doing "Ling Ting Tong" where the chorus sounds suspiciously like "I smokin' boo aye-eh, I smokin' boo!"

You can hear "bug" plainly some of the time; the one and only time I heard that before, the listening conditions weren't great either. Somebody ask Marvin so we'll really know.

I seem to remember a song about (or called) Mexican Rock & Roll where the mexicans gave up the samba to do the rock & roll. Still have the words somewhere.

Sorry to disappoint you, Bob, but I slovenly sang, "Why don't you go BUG my baby, Mr. Blues." However, I have become convinced that a whole lotta rockabillies were hoping you were right."

There ya' have it, folks, from the horse's, ahhhh, Marvin's mouth, ahhhhh, keyboard...

"I read somewhere that he did have Cherokee ancestry, but it is not all that unusual for a person to make up things to create a public personae."

Back in the '50s, the local country jocks (KXLA Pasadena, CA) frequently referred to him as 'Big chief' Marvin Rainwater. I still, all these years later, occasionally listen to "Bluebird".
