Rick's Radio show Kaput (for now)

Holy Cow, just got the news that CIUT is re-organising (whatever that means) and there will be no programming for a couple of weeks. Bummer, because we had Penny Lang from Montreal, Jim Condie from Scotland, and Susan Latimer (sister of Mudcatter Steve Latimer) booked for Monday. It would have been a good show. I'll keep you posted on what happens, but in the meantime what the hell am I going to do Monday nights for at least the next two weeks? Who's playing football?

Get some mics and a mini disc/dat/8 track/ anything even a stereo video recorder(Sound quality is excellent) - and a mixer. Make the show at home - then have your puter chew the analogue input into a webradio file :) Post the file to a webpage - If you have any problems with sound on sound email me I'll explain how to do that the easy way

Well Rick, tonight The Nature of Things is having its season premier at 9pm. Here's an excerpt from the link above.

The new season of THE NATURE OF THINGS with David Suzuki begins on Monday, October 4 with Phallacies, a provocative look at the penis, from evolution, through history and into modern-day attitudes and obsessions.

Rick, have you discussed this with Heather? Maybe a romantic dinner, a little vino, a heartfelt song or two, and you never know what else might come up.........

Anyone who's concerned with the whole nature of community radio, programming variety and programming freedom should be very concerned about what's going on at CIUT.

I highly recommend a visit to the CIUT site (if its still up) or to this alternative site.

Mike, thanks for posting those links. Reminds me of the usual and highhanded antics of commercial radio broadcasting corps; they decide on a programming change or new ownership and one day you go to work and no longer have a job. We've survived a few of those as have friends, but many have not.

Not something one would expect to see in public broadcasting, but if the trend here in Wyoming is any indication, I am not surprised. I quit sending a monthly donation three years ago when their programming went to sh*t!

Whether you live in Toronto or not, Mudcatters, I urge you to visit the links Mike posted and register you support for the programmers like Rick. Without the freedom of speech, etc. that public radio should offer, they're just another number on the commerical dial.

I talked with Rick about the situation awhile back, and I'm not surprised. Pardon the analogy here, but its hard to miss. Public/University radio is going the route of college athletics and specifically football. The ticket prices (if you can get one, and oddly, most STUDENTS can't) at Ohio State may cost you as much as those to a Pro game.

Should be interesting. (it has been for the 11 years that I've been there) I'll keep ya posted. By the way Jo77, thanks for the suggestion. We've been working on something like that for a little while anyway. I might very well call on you for some tips.

Thanx Rick - and pulease go the road this takes you on - like the Yellow Brick Road, it will go to better things. Right now what is happening on the internet is ending a long period of population conditioning by various groups. The News Papers had for a long time been the Gaurdians of truth, sadly that is not true anymore.

As hardware permits ever increasing data speeds Net Media will take over a great deal of what used be provided by Corporate sources. Also the cost of providing a service is declining by 1000's of %.

Rick your show will get more not less listeners as a Net Show.

BTW While the Soap Box is out - when a show is posted be sure to provide a file download option. Also be aware that bandwidth prevents good transmission of Video - in most cases 56k on an average line is ok for the audio but not enough for the Video stream.

A lot of messages here say 'I can't get the Realplayer to play a clip properly' Typical stuff is delays - caused by net congestion or a badly encoded file - bad quality - etc. Have tried and like the download option - it permits a clean download using Smart Download (Netscape) and an uninterupted show. For now it is the way to go.

Well, curiouser and curiouser. By the way Thanks folks (and Max). I don't mean you're not a "folks" Max, but since I'm agnostic, I choose my deities on a weekly basis, and this week your number came up.
The Powers that be have offered me a two hour show on the same night (from 6pm to 8pm) Hmmmmm, I'm thinking.

Rick - you said you were going to play a new CD on Oct 18th show. I take it this means you are back "on"?

It appears so Mario. I've decided not to take the offered two hours (I started the show 11 years ago with 2 hours) because I do basically a "live guest" program, and keeping the quality and the energy at the level I like, works best for one hour. I think Ian Angus will take over the 6 to 7 slot. Mine will be 7 to 8.

Rick,

Grab the two hour slot. Besides, ending earlier means you can get to the Tranzac earlier, where I sense that you lead a lot of great impromptu jams.

What is the status of "Let The Good Times Roll"?

Hi. Already decided that 7 to 8 suits the program format best. I BELIEVE that "Let the Good Times.." will do the 6 to 7. Our first program will be on Oct. 18th.

It's GREAT to know, Rick, that we haven't lost your show. Now that I have the current version of Real Player, I will be sure to tune you in. I'm glad it is still Monday night. There is NOTHING on TV on Monday night.

Has the organization of the station changed fundamentally or just the program lineup?

Thanks Eez. Actually things have changed drastically. With the result that some good people are outraged at being left out of the process. On the other hand, the University says they can't work with those folks. The thing that nobody seems to disagree on is that there is a huge debt that's been run up and it has to be paid.

I'm told that internet access is going to be much improved, which is nice.

Great that you are back on Rick. I always listen the next day through the Mudcat and really enjoy it.

It's interesting to read all of the messages and bulletins on the alternative CIUT site. The similarities between what is happening there and what happened to Pacifica in California are striking. However, I wonder if the organizers of the protests are doing themselves more harm than good. It seems that their bulletins are filled with vitrolic statements and rhetoric much more than is useful. In fact, it is difficult for a dispationate observer from afar (me) to figure out who is actually in the wrong or right here based upon their statements.

Anyway, we all look forward to hearing your new programs.

Thanks JAB and Arnie. Yeah, I think when they started criticising and making fun of the opposition's hair style and colour, they started losing me. Also references to "spawn of Satan" didn't help! I truly don't believe that there have been any "bad guys" in this. The bottom line to me was the huge debt that had been run up. Creditors don't care whether a radio station has noble aims or not, they want their money.

I thought this was Public, Nonprofit radio. How is the reorg going to pay off the debt? Are they going commercial?

Rick,

Are you still going to try and bring the guest's on the show down to the TRANZAC on the Monday's albeit a couple of hours earlier? - as some people have mentioned it has led to some great sessions and conversations on film and much more.

You'll be able to interact with Greenfiddle Morris dancers more!!! BTW did you ever trace a suitable squeezebox?

Cheers Rana

Hi Rana. Sure, we'll be there. Hmmmmm, a chance to have intercourse with the Morrismen eh? Oh well, we'll come anyway! Yup I got the concertina from "Joel" (Brand new Folksongs) but several of the buttons were defective, so I sent it back. Still looking.
