06 Dec 11 - 08:25 AM (#3269224) Subject: Young New Band - Jaywalkers From: Dave the Gnome fRoots describes them as "Intelligent, enthusiastic bluegrass-tinged folk". I'd call them brilliant and recommend them anytime. "Intelligent, enthusiastic bluegrass-tinged folk" Jaywalkers We had Jay and Michael introduced by and often accomapanying Gary and Vera Aspey at our folk club last night, I hope that we can close the door on the old arguments that have been raging about English folk being unwelcoming to newcomers and different styles. I will certainly get to see the full lineup, complete with Lucy on bass and harmonies, as soon as I can and I would recommend that anyone does the same. Cheers DtG |

06 Dec 11 - 09:40 AM (#3269263) Subject: RE: Young New Band - Jaywalkers From: Bernard We've had them as guests on Oldham Community Radio 99.7fm a couple of times (though without Lucy, the amazing slap-bass player!), they played at Lymm Festival in June 2011 and are booked again for 2012, and they also played at my birthday bash in August 2011! Well worth making the effort to go to see them! |

06 Dec 11 - 12:10 PM (#3269326) Subject: RE: Young New Band - Jaywalkers From: Rusty Dobro How well I remember the Jaywalkers! Matching suits, white Vox Phantom guitars, and a string of hits based on our fave light classical tunes. Toured constantly with all the top '60s bands. It's a lot to live up to. |
06 Dec 11 - 04:56 PM (#3269466) Subject: RE: Young New Band - Jaywalkers From: GUEST Quite so - except these young 'uns are 'Jaywalkers' without the definite article...!! I reckon they can hold their own in any company! |

07 Dec 11 - 05:49 AM (#3269716) Subject: RE: Young New Band - Jaywalkers From: TopcatBanjo Just to get back on to topic and give the young band JAYWALKERS some well-deserved praise.... Michael (mandolin & guitar) Jay (fiddle, lead vocals, guitar) and Lucy (bass) are really talented musicians and lovely people to boot! Jay's voice is incredible and she's only 18...Michael is a talented songwriter as well as musician and has written many of the songs on their CD "18 Miles"...and as already mentioned above, Lucy is a great bass player. Do give this young band your support if get the chance to see them live (or book them if you are in the North West!), they are superb. Here's a little clip I took earlier this year which gives a taste of Jay's wonderful singing (sorry it's so short due to limitations of my PC to upload anything!). Mike wrote this song. 07 Dec 11 - 09:46 AM (#3269808) Subject: RE: Young New Band - Jaywalkers From: Girl Friday My friend's brother was in the Original Jaywalkers.... so she was asking about this new band. They were semi-finalists along with our Ben Little.... but, of course, only Engliosh tradition gets to the finals. |

08 Dec 11 - 12:21 PM (#3270538) Subject: RE: Young New Band - Jaywalkers From: TopcatBanjo DtG - Jaywalkers were in the BBC Young Folk Awards back in 2008 (may have been called the 2009 award). I assume that Girl Friday is referring to the commonly held assumption that bands who aren't hardcore "English" folk don't tend to get to the final/win the final. And Jaywalkers are more to the American/transatlantic end of the spectrum having sprung from bluegrass beginnings. But I don't want to start another war of words on here and I certainly don't know enough about the workings of such things! I actually came back on to correct my earlier post - their CD is of course called "16 Miles". Maria |
