I first remembered him from "December Bride" and then as the replacement sidekick to Lt. Friday (Jack Webb) on "Dragnet"...long time before Colonel Potter. He was also in "Dragonwyck", one of my favorite Vincent Price films. Not to mention as Ulysses S Grant in "How the West Was Won". He was also in "What Did You Do In the War, Daddy?" and a slew of other films.

Just heard this on NPR in the car on my way home a few minutes ago. Good solid actor.

Harry was 96 years old. He had a good long run, M*A*S*H was the best. Rest in peace.

I still watch reruns of M*A*S*H ... and Harry helped keep that show going.

He was great and versatile. I'm glad he had a good, long life.

He had an early bit park on MASH as a crazy general who wanted Frank to trim his nosehair and a black soldier to sing Camptown Races. The response was so positive, he was given a main role.

Dragnet, December Bride, MASH,

RIP

I loved the Col Potter character. Col Blake was a doofus, but Potter was as smart as Hawkeye and Trapper John, but he was kind and wise like everybody's ideal father figure. One character I just LIKED, and he lived because of Harry Morgan.

Sins....That episode of MASH was great. I think the General's name was Rock or Steele of the like but when he requests the song I damn near died laughing the first time I saw it. The actual line he used has become a standard around here for when we want to put something off:
"But first.....a number!"

My favorite MASH scene was when Clinger went in to ask for a visit "states-side" because his grandmother had just died...

Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) opened a file and read all the various and sundry requests that Clinger had made earlier about such things as his grandmother dieing, needing an operation, etc., etc... His delivery was so cool...

Heck of a good guy... That shown thru in MASH...

R.I.P., Harry...

The NPR segment on All Things Considered today was truly good.

The following really struck me:

In 1983, Morgan spoke at a press conference about ending a series so beloved that the last show drew a record 125 million viewers. He said someone had asked him if he thought M*A*S*H had made him a better actor.

"And I said I didn't know about that, but I know it's made me a better human being and there aren't many shows you can say that about," he said.

Like Linn, my first memories of him were as Bill Gannon in "Dragnet", a show my father never missed, and therefore, neither did the rest of the family.

Definitely one of the "greats" as an actor, and, it seems, a good man.

Just glanced at a little bio material: professional actor since 1937, in movies since 1942. With all the things I really enjoyed him in, one espisode of Gunsmoke always stuck with me. He played a quiet settler who would never have thought of using a gun on a human being until a sadistic outlaw endangered his family. Morgan managed to kill the man, but was accused of cowardly murder and was almost run out of the area before the truth of the matter came out. It was a different portrayal than I've seen him do otherwise, and a fine performance.

It took me a while to get hooked. I had seen the movie and loved it. Then the series came out with all these new actors that were not in the original movie so i was not impressed. Boy was I wrong.
I still try and watch it at 5 p.m. our time for the reruns.

While I'm too young to really remember him in anything before M*A*S*H, I loved him. I still regularly watch reruns and the Col. Potter era is my favorite. I'm glad he had a good long life and I, for one, will really miss him.

The world gets all hot and bothered over leading men but it's actors like Harry Morgan that make movies come alive. He could play a lowlife or a loving grandfather with equal ease. John Wayne was better known but he was a one note actor. Harry Morgan had range. Totally believable in any kind of role.

He was great, as was the show. When I lived in South Korea in 1977-78, we all loved watching MASH on Armed Forces TV!
